Carson, Dr. Roland Annan

Carson, Dr. Roland Annan

November 28th, 2012

Passed away in the early morning hours of Wednesday November 28th, 2012 at his home in London, Ontario surrounded by loving family and caregivers. He was 76. Born on July 22, 1936 in Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana (then-called "Gold Coast") to Gilbert Stewart Carson and Justina Amuah. Roland attended the Government Boys School in Cape Coast for his primary education and Mfantsipim Secondary School for his secondary education. He worked in Ghana as a teacher for a year after his secondary school. He was awarded a generous scholarship to attend Cambridge University in England where he completed his Undergraduate Degree. He proceeded to Oxford University where he would earn his Medical Degree, specializing in Paediatrics. In 1969, Roland arrived in Montreal aboard the Russian cruise liner Alexander Pushkin: the beginning of a new life in Canada. He was recruited as Chief Resident at the War Memorial Children's Hospital in London, Ontario. After several fruitful years at CPRI, he set up a private practice in London where he worked until September of this year when the severity of his illness forced him to retire. Dr. Carson was a hardworking and dedicated physician who always went beyond the call of duty for his patients. He was committed to providing accessible medical care to everyone and was known for his abilities as a diagnostician, his attention to research and his warmth towards his patients. His commitment and service to the community and the field of medicine will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Roland was an avid reader and enjoyed music. He had a quiet determination and liveliness about him, a loving smile and great sense of humour. He was also a huge fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is survived by his wife, Gail (nee Regan), a son, Kofi currently of New York and a daughter, Akua currently of Toronto; sisters - Giftie Hendricks Etwire (Mommy) and Naomi Hendricks Carson (Baaba); brothers - Ishmael Gillie Carson (Johnny) and Alex Carson; predeceased by two brothers Sammy Carson and Gilbert Stewart Carson (Yokwesi). His family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the countless medical and support staff involved in his exemplary care. A special thanks to Dr. Kirk Hamilton and his palliative care team, under CCAC and VON, Dr. Susan Patel and social worker Kathy Murano, Dr. Winquist of the London Regional Cancer Center and the numerous dedicated staff there. Also, a heartfelt thank you to Helen Battler of Spiritual Care at the London Regional Cancer Centre and Dr. Verinder Sharma of Regional Mental Health Care London for their guidance and compassion. His family also extends a thousand thanks to their devoted circle of family and friends who have demonstrated their love and support from both near and far. The beautiful life of Roland Carson will be commemorated on Sunday, December 9th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Museum London, 421 Ridout Street North, London, Ontario. We invite all those touched by him to attend. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, The Children's Health Foundation or the London Health Sciences Foundation - Cancer Centre.

Shannon SarazenMy deepest sympathies to you Gail and to your children. Roland was not just a pediatrician, he was part of my family. I had the pleasure of knowing Roland from the day I was born. He was a kind, gentle, caring, giving, funny, selfless caregiver and friend. He was always there, not just for myself, but my children, and entire family. It was my pleasure to try and give back what he had given to me throughout my life, while he fought his courageous battle. I will never forget his advice, or friendship. Words cannot express what a wonderful man Roland was.

Teresa and Mason D'AvirroHe was Mason's Dr. who originally diagnosed him with Sydenham's Chorea but once I had done the research to discover he was better diagnosed with the uncommon and not yet established PANDAS, he was totally on board with doing whatever it took to make Mason better. If it weren't for him knowing about the strept infection causing Mason's symptoms in the first place we would never have been able to get where we are today with the successful treatment of Mason's symptoms without the use of horrible psychiatric drugs that cause other problems and often don't even calm the symptoms anyway. London has lost a truly dedicated and well educated, caring doctor. He will be greatly missed by all who new him.
Maria and Darren Sargent`Dr. Roland was a kind and gentle man. He was always patient with my children. Always made them feel comfortable. Amanda, Greg, Liam, Kaya, and new baby MaggieHow wonderful to read all these amazing comments! If only you could be reading them now Dr. Carson. However, I do believe you knew how loved you were by this community! I am sending Gail, Kofi, Akua and family my warmest thoughts and energy...Dr. Carson was such a gentle soul, and my children and I adored him. After my Nan, he was the first person I told when I discovered I was pregnant with Liam (I remember walking to his practice from my home absolutely panicked!) His calm words "Is this what you want because we can discuss options?" Once he knew my thoughts of joyful hysteria, he hugged me and advised me to tell my Mom and Nan :-) All our love...Amanda and family xo
Dr. Ben and Judy GoldbergDear Gail: "Rolly" was one of the favourite pediatricians at CPRI. He was respected by concerned families, for his calm reassuring manner , with the most complex problems, that a pediatrician could encounter. We shared many a smile, when, we and his other colleagues could get together. We were hoping to get together, one more time, as a group to share fond memories, but that wasn't to be.Instead we join with you to remember happy and wonderful memories. Sincerest condolences. Ben and Judy Goldberg

Alysson, Tom and Cindy StoreyWords do not do justice to the sadness over the loss of "Uncle Roland", which is how we knew him. Words also cannot do justice to what a wonderful, kind and good-hearted man he was to everyone who was lucky enough to know him. The stories so beautifully expressed here from everyone he touched as a physician are testimony to what an incredible person he was in his profession. The Uncle Roland we knew outside the office and hospital was equally wonderful. Those of us who know and love the Patels know and love the Carsons just the same. Thank you for helping our friends through their journey. It is now time for us to return the favour to Gail, Kofi and Akua. Rest in peace.

The Jeanveau Family Dr. Carson was truly one in a million! Not only as a Doctor but as a human being! If we all tried to be even half as compassionate and kind as he is, the world would be an even better place. I have bragged to all my friends and family about my children having the best Pediatrician in the world, since the first day we met him! I truly feel they did and were blessed to have known him! There will never be another Dr.Carson. To the Carson family, Sharon and Kathy, my thoughts and prayers are with you all! Condolences from the Jeanveau family. Rest in Peace Dr.Carson. You will never be forgotten.
The Sabo FamilyWe would like to extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to the Caron family. Dr. Carson was our children's doctor for 22 years, they were truly blessed to have had him for all those years as their Doctor and never wanted to see any other Doctor if he was not available, because they always said, Dr. Carson always gets it right the first time. We will miss his warm handshake and genuine smile that greeted us at the start of every appointment. There will never be another Dr. Carson, he was truly one in a million.
Aldwyn, Julie, Grantly, Brandon, and Malik FranklinFirst are deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Carson. He was a wonderful doctor and human being. The Drouin FamilyOur heartfelt sympathies go out to Dr. Carson's family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. We had the absolute privilege of having Dr. Carson look after our boys and he will be sadly-missed. There was never a time when our children didn't look forward to coming to see Dr. Carson, no matter how sick they were. We can't count the number of times Dr. Carson went well beyond the call of duty to help us or give advice. He never steered us wrong. We, as a family can't begin to express how much he touched us all. He reassured us as new parents, and we had all the faith in the world in his medical abilities as things cropped up over the years. We are fortunate to have known such a gifted, gentle and kind man. If ever someone had found his true calling in life, it was Dr. Carson. You will be so missed by so many.

jarrod mccarty and janine stapletonDear Dr Rolen Carson, You were a great person and I send my condolences to all your family and friends. You were not just a doctor but a friend and you were always kind and you may have been a pediatrician but you had such a large heart that you also took on adult patients and you also did volunteer work in Africa. You will always be remembered. R.I.P Dr Rolen Carson.
Tammy KranendonkMy sympathies to family of Dr Carson. He was a wonderful, caring Dr. who went above and beyond to help me with my illness as a child. He has always held a special place in my heart and always will. God bless.
Liz FranzeI haven’t been able to do a condolence as I have found the loss of Roland very hard. It has been a while now, and some days it feels like we just lost him. The thing about Dr Roland Carson is, if he was you Dr it didn’t end there, he was like family. He came into our lives years ago as my brother Joe, who passed in 2006, and was handicapped, had been referred to him after our paediatrician Dr Dennison passed away. My brother needed to have a paediatrician for his care and so we all got to know him, had him take on our children at young ages and he had them and me until he could no longer practice. I remember when my brother was in Victoria Hospital and was very ill and they consulted with Roland but didn’t in the least take into consideration Roland’s advice, (which was the right advice) having had my brother for over 30 years. He was sent home and passed away a month later. Roland came to our home to pronounce him and you could see the pain in his eyes. After one of my children’s appointments, he asked me to stay back and with upset in his eyes, apologized to me about our Joe. I said to him, and I stand by it in his memory, ‘Beautiful Dr, you did everything right and it’s not on you that they didn’t listen. You were family to him and he adored you so just keep on doing the good you do and caring so much about your patients’. There has not been many other Dr’s with the compassion Roland had. His staff always pleasant and polite and just a great team. He will forever be missed more as family than friend, than Dr. He meant so much to so so many and his legacy will always live on. ~You are missed Roland~ ❤️❤️🙏🙏
