Hamilton, Helena 'Lena'

Hamilton, Helena 'Lena'

July 10th, 2017

After years of tender loving care by McCormick Dementia Services, Helena ‘Lena’ Hamilton, on Monday, July 10th, 2017, vacated her beautiful room to become whole again. Helena was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1936, daughter of Hannah Flower Cooper (1991) and William Murray Cooper (1969). In 1961, she married John Hamilton, her teenage sweetheart and, within days, sailed for Canada, initially for two years. Both Lena and John were employed by The University of Western Ontario. These two years became a lifetime as New Canadians. Lena and John created two Canadian sons:  Iain (Caren) and Alastair (Tammy) and spent many decades enjoying Canada, often camping in their VW Camper in summer and winter.  They were happy that their children continued outdoor pastimes with their own children. Lena enjoyed entertaining and, both in Canada and Scotland, made friends for life. She became famous for simple tasty snacks and “Lena Cooper’s Super Curry Dip” was mandatory at all events. She was a loving sister to big brother Murray (Jean), still in Scotland, and was blessed with niece, Evelyn (Chris) and nephew, Douglas (Una) and grandchildren Hayden, Adara, Ayla and Jennifer (David). Until the very week she was admitted to long term care she enjoyed services at her Metropolitan United Church were, before she was afflicted, was for ten years the welcoming receiver of registration fees for Met’s Time Out Outreach Program. Lena at one time loved playing recreational bridge, was never happier than when tending her flower garden, walking for miles in the hills of Scotland or portaging in Algonquin Park. A service of celebration will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Friday, July 14th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation two hours prior. Charitable donations to McCormick Care Foundation, 2022 Kains Road, London, Ontario  N6K 0A8 or to Metropolitan United Church Foundation, 468 Wellington Street, London, Ontario  N6A 3P8 will be gratefully acknowledged.
