Nicholson, John Robert 'Bob'

Nicholson, John Robert 'Bob'

April 6th, 2021

Of London, passed away following a long illness, at the age of 93 on April 6, 2021. Dearly loved husband of 67 years of Pat Nicholson and father of John Nicholson (Marg), of London, Paul, of London, and Anne Gatfield (Chris), of Mill Bay, B.C. Proud grandfather of Jake (Vicki), Will (Andrea), Ben, Eve (Ryan), Skye (Tom), Chloë, Max (Kellee) and Kate (Nick). Great-grandfather of Robbie, George, Avery, Saoirse, Jade, Romi, Miles and Oscar.

Bob was born in Vancouver, B.C. on April 4, 1928, to the Hon. J. R. Nicholson and Jean Nicholson. After graduating from UWO's Faculty of Medicine in 1953 and completing postgraduate work in Toronto and Pittsburgh, Bob practised medicine as a respected paediatrician in London into the 1980s. He was Chief of Paediatrics at St. Joseph’s Hospital and a Clinical Assistant Professor with UWO’s Faculty of Medicine.

Through a long and satisfying retirement, Bob was a champion bird carver, he enjoyed traveling, bird watching, and golf and bridge at the London Hunt & Country Club. He loved to compete and win, and he always liked to inject colour into his wardrobe choices.

Book of Condolences

Rick BainsMy sincere condolences to the Nicholson family. I was fortunate enough to have Bob as my patient in Ophthalmology when I started practice in 1994. Such a fine gentleman, always so interesting and jovial. Will fondly remember Bob, one of the fine gentleman Doctors of London.
Heather and Michael LernerOur heartfelt condolences to Pat and the Nicholson family. Bob personified all that one would hope for and expect in a doctor. He was a fine example for those young doctors who followed. He treated his young patients as family well beyond his professional responsibilities. In our own time of need he was there and we are grateful for him. Bob was a fixture on the golf course in his resplendent colours. Always dressed to the 9's whether golfing (in his knee length Bermuda socks) or off the course professionally or socially. We hope the family is comforted at this difficult time by fond memories of times together. May he rest in peace.

Sue DeActisYour family has had the tradition of using the name "John Robert" on many of your family members, sometimes this would be very confusing in our office. I used to call him "Dr Bob" and he would always say to me "if I can call you by your first name you should call me "Bob". However I told him I would always call him Dr Bob. I worked for many different family members of the years, I didn't get to know all of you, however I did meet or talk (email) many of your wonderful family of the course of my many years at PwC. I was truly blessed to have known so many of your wonderful family. My condolences to the family, retired employee PwC Sue (and Terry) DeActis
Tanya Sceli-GregoryOn behalf of the Sceli family, we would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to Pat and the entire Nicholson family. Our family was very fortunate to have Dr. Nicholson as our admired and trusted paediatrician in the 1970’s and 80’s, and we could not have asked for better care and compassion than was provided by Bob and Pat. Dr. Nicholson treated his patients like family, and helped get our family through a wide range of medical issues throughout the years. He answered his phone at all hours, even if it was on the weekend, and provided advice and comfort for which we will always be grateful. He also went on to educate and train many new doctors, who were very fortunate to learn from such a genuine, respected paediatrician. It is nice to hear that Bob was passionate about many interesting and rewarding hobbies before and after his retirement, many of which we are sure will continue to be special interests of his loving family. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. - The Sceli Family
