Melvyn Earle Logan

April 1, 2013

On Easter Monday, April 1, 2013 at the age of 71, he passed away peacefully with his three girls at his side after a valiant battle with cancer.  Son of Edward Donald Logan and Jean Fraser Logan of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.  Beloved husband of Barbara Elaine McLellan Logan through 50 years of marriage.  Loving father of Leanne Gay Logan (James Alan Johnson) and Heidi May Logan (Larry William McAuley).  Mel always made family his top priority.  He was passionate about travel, and visited all 50 states and 10 provinces at least once, toured Europe multiple times, and explored the Caribbean and Pacific by land and by sea.  He earned his degrees in both London, ON and Fredericton, NB.  Mel enjoyed 33 years playing with computers and his colleagues at London Life Insurance Company and IBM.  His early retirement allowed for much gallivanting with Barb, including taking up Birding with 515 North American birds on his life list.  He was active in his community as a regular Habitat volunteer in Tucson, AZ and as a Queen Scout in his youth.  Mel was a good friend to those he knew, sharing his caring and positive spirit, his willingness to listen, and his keen mind (Mensa member), often introducing others to new places they would particularly enjoy.  He will be sorely missed by the friends and family he leaves behind in London, Port Stanley, Tucson, AZ, Memphis, TN, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.   Heartfelt thanks go out to Mel’s VON team who provided amazing homecare and support for the whole family.  A memorial service to celebrate Mel’s life will be conducted at the WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Friday, April 5, 2013 at 3:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior.  In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Mel are asked to consider the Canadian Cancer Society.

Remembering Mel fondly from London Life (many days and nights in the computer room with "D" Shift). He was one of the people who encouraged me to pursue my BA thru night school and finally correspondence and for that I will always be grateful. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.

Mel was one of those guys who always had a smile on his face and a laugh on its way. He was a great man and I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm thankful for the friendship he offered my dad and how he lifted both our spirits during his visits.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Barb, Leanne, Heidi and their families, as their celebrate the life of a loving husband and father. Our prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time. Mel was a good and harmonious neighbor - I used to enjoy watching him whistle as he walked up the street! Blessings.

Dear Barb, Leanne, Heidi and families, I am so very sorry to hear of Mel's passing. He was, without a doubt, one of the finest persons I have ever known. We go back quite a long time; high school and before. His quiet, unassuming manner as well as his wonderful smile and good nature were always present. Ever willing to do what was right he was a perfect example of what the human race should be. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune to have known him. Be assured that my thoughts are with all of you. Love Fred

May Melvyn Earle Logan RIP a man of devotion and honor, "...Everything he has made pretty in its time. Even time indefinite he has put in their heart... I have come to know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good during one’s life; and also that every man should eat and indeed drink and see good for all his hard work. It is the gift of God."Ecclesiastes 3:10-13" The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, ... to a resurrection of life." John 5:28,29

Barb, Leanne, Heidi, Larry and AJ Sorry to hear of Mel's passing but good to know you were able to comfort him in the home you shared. An exhausting time for you but know that would be his and your wish. The Logan family always made friends and family welcome in their home. We appreciated the times we were together in London and at Harmony Lake. We also acknowledge Mel's kind devotion to Johnathan, Nancy and Madeline when Alexander was born and Johnathan was dealing with that painful fractured leg...trips to hospital appointments, yard work and whatever needed to be cared for. Memories will be treasured of the traveling adventures and remarkable bird count.., you truly enjoyed life with Mel as husband and father... an inspiration to us all. Love Ruth

Dear Barb and Family, I was very sorry to see Mr. Logan's Obituary..I have lost contact with my former patients so I was unaware of his illness..Mr.Logan was always a welcome name on my list of dental hygiene patients for the day..We shared many stories about our shared Nova Scotian heritage..His smile and laugh were very contagious..I respected his humble manner and his almost shy demeanour..I am sad that he has been taken from your lives..Please know that you are in my prayers and my thoughts as you grieve this very special man..Hugs to you Barb, Dawn MacAskill-Cumming.

Dear Barb, Leanne and Heidi, my heart is full. This beautiful photo of Mel that says so much about him - it reminds me of his love and good humour. My thoughts have been with you all these past months, and they are with you now. I am so very sorry.

Mel was a wonderful, caring, jovial Brother-in-Law. He was always smiling and cheerful no matter what the task, whether carrying umbrellas to the beach for Barbara or taking us to a Miniatures Show in Arizona. He and Barbara made our trips to Arizona memorable and enjoyable In earlier years we all had such grand times at the "Tower" in Economy. Years later they parked their RV on the site and again entertained family royally. Mel was always a gracious host. Meals provided at Barb and Mel's home were gourmet delights. They loved people and welcomed everyone into their home. Mel will always be remembered for his many kindnesses, ready smile and a heart of gold. He will always have a special place in our hearts. Farewell my dear Brother-in Law - you will always be missed!

I am so sorry to see the passing of someone I remember very fondly. It has been many years since we spent time socializing together with the London Life gang, but I can hear his laugh as clearly now as then. The picture captures his smile which he shared with everyone. I have nothing but warm memories of a very special man and send my sincerest condolences to Barb and the girls.

To Barbara, Heidi, Leanne and spouses - Although you lived far from Mel and Barb's roots, I still always felt close. The Christmas letters about Mel and Barb's escapades and you girls, kept us 'in touch'. I can truthfully say no couple I know has packed so much into 50 years of marriage and for that you can be so very grateful. I will always remember Mel's huge grin that made you feel oh so welcome when visiting down at "the Tower". How I enjoyed those times. Mel was a wonderful husband and father and he'll always be close by your side and in our hearts. Carol Anita

Best of Friends Barb, Leanne, AJ, Heidi and Larry, Ray and I are crushed by the news of Mel's passing, even though we knew it was imminent. He is now at peace and in a much better place. Mel was so blessed to have such loving daughters, devoted wife and his best friend. When it hurts to reminisce the memories and you are afraid to go on, look by your side and we are only inches away to comfort you; this was my promise to Mel the last time I visited him. Mel was much loved and he will sadly be missed. Caroline and Ray.

Barb, Leanne and Heidi. At this time I know that words cannot fill the void left with Mel's passing. I was at a loss for words when I heard of Mel's illness and prayed that the Dr's would somehow find a cure, but alas that wasn't to be and I guess God felt it was time for Mel to start a new world wide journey. I hope I brought some minor comfort and smiles in the emails we passed to one another. I know the ones he sent me ALWAY brightened my day. I know we hadn't seen each other face to face the last few years however the continued contact online made me feel he was always there (even to bounce feeling comments off one another periodically).... I WILL MISS ALL THAT IMMENSLEY..... With Love and Prayers Ted & Sherry Kreibich
