W. Howard Henderson

March 16, 2015

It is with great sadness that the family of W. Howard Henderson (age 73) announces his passing after a short stay at his beloved University Hospital (London) on Monday March 16, 2015.  Howard is survived by his siblings Irwin, Cecil (Ghislaine) and Shirley (Lorne Dundas).  Beloved Uncle “DOC” to his nieces and nephews Nancy Henderson, Brian Dundas, Laurie Rocco (Dave), Lisa Henderson (Peter Ingleton), Linda Cruikshank (Joe) and Robbie Henderson. Great Uncle (in every sense of the word) to Matthew, Julia, Riley, Taylor, Max, Austin, Noah, Kayla and Ella.  Predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Alma Henderson and sister-in-law Edith Henderson.  Remembered by his extended family and many special friends.  Howard was a long time employee of University Hospital London and a volunteer there for the past 13 years since his retirement. He was an active square dancer, skater, lawn bowler, member of Rowntree Memorial United Church and volunteer at Fanshawe Pioneer Village. He will be greatly missed by his “extended families” at many of the local restaurants that he frequented regularly.  His smile, his hats and his cheerful demeanor brought much joy to all that he met and touched with his warm heart.   Visitation will be held on Friday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, where the memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 1:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Howard are asked to consider the London Health Sciences Foundation, University Hospital.

We both send our sincerest condolences and friendship in the sudden passing of Howard. He has been such a tremendous supporter of square dancing and a great example of friendship to all. He's always been so willing and gently and happily partnering with other dancers whether experienced or brand new to square dance. I'm very sorry to hear of Howard's passing. Howard was such a pleasant man, always happy, and a valuable and dedicated volunteer at UH. He would round the corner with "Hello Number One" and a smile on his face! Howard was extremely well liked and will be sadly missed by all.

~ Sandy MacMillan

My sincere condolences to Howard's family. Howard was a very kind and caring person and he touched the lives of many. Howard was well-liked by both his patients and his colleagues when he worked at UH. He always wanted to be of service and I know he volunteered at many places when he was working. He will be missed by all who knew him.

~ Kathryn McDermott

My condolences go out to Howard's family. As a new, and single, female square dancer, Howard was my partner at clinics for new dancers. He had infinite patience and the energy to be up for every dance (even when I was ready for a rest). His unbounded energy amazed me further when during breaks in dancing he related tales of his volunteer work at the hospital and for Fanshawe Pioneer Village, and all the different dance clubs he attended, as well as skating, ... At 20+ years my "senior" he had more energy than me!! It will not be the same at square dance events (especially those involving a meal) when the caller says "Square it up!" and I look around the perimeter and can't spot Howard. You'll be missed "pardner"!

~ Nancy Haggith

Our condolences to Howard's family. Howard was a great lawn bowler. He contributed a lot of his time for the good of the club and were are better because of his efforts. We will miss him at the Thistle Club. Thank you Howard

What a loss for all who came in contact with him! Met him back in the early 90's while an RN at UH. I so enjoyed his stories and his lust for life and how he loved that institution with his whole heart! You are so right Catarina Tavares....he was the true mascot of UH! You will be greatly missed!

I met Howard as a young nurse over 40 years ago. We worked together on nephro urology at University Hospital. Night shifts were always easier when Howard was there -he had such a positive attitude and would do anything to help. Howard was a one of a kind and he did touch the lives of many. University Hospital was blessed to have him on staff for so many years and then continuing into his volunteer time. Sincerest sympathy to Howards' family-you will miss him the most.

I worked with Howard for many years and then when he retired we would see him collecting menus and helping those who were unable to fill them out. Always with a smile and cheery hello for everyone.

so sad to hear about Howard.. I worked with Howard on 9th floor ortho, then in portering. He always loved whatever he did. And he obviously loved University Hospital. My friends and I ran into him at Billy-t's a few weeks ago. So great to see him. He will be missed by many.

I want to join the chorus of love and appreciation for Howard and all that he stood for in this world. I didn’t know him well — but I do know how much he meant to so many people. I will remember his gentle smile, his jaunty step, and especially his kindness towards my sister, who lives in the same building as Howard did. He was a very bright light and truly one of a kind. My heartfelt condolences to his dear family and friends.

i worked as an Operating Room nurse for many years at UH. Howard was always a breath of sunshine and truly enjoyed his days there. He always put the patients at ease. I just ran into him a couple of months ago at UH. Still doing what he did best, passing on his friendship and spirit He will be missed

SO sorry to hear about HOWARD. I have known Howard for over 40 years at university hospital. First worked with him as an RNA. The patients all loved HOWARD, especially at that time years ago patients were in hospital for an extended amount of time. Every afternoon HOWARD would go around and wash patients hair and did this with so much love for his patients. He was loved by patients and staff. Later HOWARD retired and continued to be involved at University as a volunteer, collecting menus. On a special occasion you would see him dressed for easter, St pats day, Christmas. He brought so much joy. Also in a restaurant I would not be surprised to see HOWARD walk in. Richies even had a HOWARD SPECIAL.. HOWARDS favorite words were "HELLO BLONDIE" HOWARD YOU WILL BE TRULY MISSED BY ALL.
