Robert George Dunlop
February 4, 2017
Passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 4, 2017, in Niagara Falls after a two year battle with cancer, with his three children around him. Born in Chatham, Ontario in 1929 Bob enjoyed his 45 year career as a journalist having worked in Dresden, Chatham, Grand Prairie, Alberta, Toronto and London. During his 10 years as Managing Editor of the Chatham Daily News, he developed an interest in educating and developing new journalists. After Bob’s move to The London Free Press in 1967, as a Senior Copy Editor, he continued some of his teaching, first with school children through the newspaper in the classroom as well as tours. In the late ‘80s, he became an Adjunct Professor of Journalism at the University of Western Ontario. After 25 years at the London Free Press, Bob retired in 1992 and became a member of the Middlesex London Kiwanis Club, serving in various roles as historian, editor of the newsletter and member of the bequest and endowment committee. Bob loved spending time reading and writing outside on his deck in Queenston, Ontario, where he had moved this past year. At various times, Bob has been an avid sailor, skier, golfer, jazz and wine enthusiast. Predeceased by his wife, Mary Grace. He is survived by his children: Mary Ann Dunlop, Laura Dunlop-Dibbs, Robert Dunlop; his grandson Jackson Dunlop and his brother and sister-in-law, Al and Elizabeth Dunlop. A memorial service will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Friday, February 17th, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Bob are asked to consider The Kiwanis Club of London Middlesex, WAYS mental health support (London) or the Walker Family Cancer Centre (St. Catharines).

Bob and I were deskmates at The Globe and Mail back in the '50s, he a police reporter, me a copy boy/editorial clerk who aspired to journalism. He made a profound impact on the lives of the young Hutchison family. It was Bob who hired me at The Chatham Daily News. Like many others, I benefited from his wise counsel en route to a successful career in the newspaper game and beyond. Before his move to Queenston last autumn, we sipped coffee and swapped reminiscences about the good old days. I cherish the memory of that pleasant afternoon, filled with warm tales and renewed friendship. He was a great guy. I was lucky to have been allowed to share a small part of his life.
Bob I hope you are at peace with the love of your life Mary. I was honored to know you briefly and enjoy the wisdom of life that you were more than willing to share over a bottle of wine. Bon voyage bob
Hey cousin Bob. You were my stability during my toughest times. Just like the saIL on your boat. You knew how to keep it in tac. I would come to you when I wasn't sure and left with hope. You were comfort and I knew I was alone. But you never let me stop trying. Because that was our way, the Trousdell way. Probably more so, Dunlop way. I will miss you but I know soonwe'll be together again playing another eighteen holes, my cousin. I love you.
Bob gathered me up from the back shop of the Dresden News and signed me up as a rookie reporter for the Chatham News. My respect for Bob is legendary with family members, for he justifiably receives full credit for launching my newspaper career. As an owner/operator of weekly newspapers, I called on his wisdom, talent and honesty, many times over the years. Clearly, it was my good fortune to have known Bob Dunlop.
