Ian I Cheng
November 11, 2019
Passed away unexpectedly, surrounded by his family, at Victoria Hospital, on Monday, November 11, 2019, in his 64th year. He is survived by his wife, Joan Hyde, and their children, Kristen Cheng, of Peterborough, and Tyler Cheng, of Morgantown, West Virginia. Also survived by sisters Susan Cheng (David Hoy) and Terry Cheng (George King), and their families, as well as many Chien and Cheng aunts, uncles and cousins. He will also be missed by his billet sons Aaron Berisha and Kole Sherwood. Ian was predeceased by his parents, Olive Chien and HsinHsia Cheng. Ian came to Canada with his family from Taiwan in his early teens and settled in Toronto. He was a proud alumnus of Lakehead University, but even prouder of being a professional engineer. For the past 18 years Ian worked for J-AAR Excavating and absolutely loved his job and his co-workers. Ian believed in giving back to his community and did this through his affiliation with Southwest Optimist, Southwest Optimist Competitive Soccer, Professional Engineers of Ontario London Chapter, Gold Medal Basketball and the Canadian Chinese National Council, London Chapter. Ian was an avid supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, Toronto Blue Jays and, of course, The London Knights. Special thanks to the excellent and compassionate staff at Victoria Hospital – Critical Care Unit. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, Ontario, where a Celebration of Life will be conducted on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to KidSport (London Chapter) or The Max Domi Fund for Type 1 Diabetes at jdrf.ca/maxdomifund. Words alone cannot express how deeply saddened we were to hear of Ian's passing. Such a huge loss to your family. Ian was an extraordinary man who had a very special place in our father's heart. Back when Ian was a student working at the MNR, during his years at Lakehead University, our father Bill took him under his wing. He was his mentor and the bridge that led him to his engineering success. Years passed, but the bond they shared was never forgotten. Whether it was through a letter, Christmas card or a phone call, they still kept in touch. In fact a couple of years ago, Ian and Joan were in Thunder Bay and they made a point of connecting with my parents. Mom and Dad were absolutely thrilled. Sadly for all of us, this connection now has a monumental void, as our father also passed away a few months ago. No one is meant to last forever, but what we feel in our hearts will never leave us. May you cherish your father's memory and know that our Dad will be watching over him, just as he did so many years ago. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of you. Sincerely, Elsie, Susan, Sandra, Stephanie and Families
We are terribly saddened to hear of my cousin Ian's passing. Joan, Kristen, Tyler and family, you are in our prayers as you grieve the loss of such a wonderful man. May God comfort you during this time and be near to you.
So sad to hear of Ian's passing and so sorry I was unable to attend the visitation or service. Just wanted you to know you are being thought of at this most difficult of times. Ian lived a life that although tragically shortened leaves a legacy of good deeds and character that will live on.
So sorry to hear about Ian. How life changes so quickly. We are also sorry we are unable to be there for the Service but we just wanted to let you know that you are in our Hearts and our Thoughts.

Very sorry for your loss Joan......take comfort in remembering the times you spent together and love of your children that you both shared.
We moved to London just 5 years ago from Muskoka. New to the city with twin boy desperate to play basketball Ian was our saviour. He continued to be the same when my daughter wanted a play to play. Ian somehow made time to make everyone feel important and make individuals part of a community. I learnt of his passing through my high school children. He touched generations. We were all saddened by the news and send our love and prayers to you all at this incredibly sad news.
Ian was our beloved eldest cousin. A good husband, father, and big brother. We are deeply saddened by his unexpected passing. We are looking at the pictures we took in 2011 and 2006, those are good memories. We will miss him dearly. Our deepest condolences to Joan, Kristen, Tyler and rest of the family.
I have known Ian and Joan and their family since they moved to London ON in the 1980's. Ian was a kind-hearted, helpful, sincere, caring friend. He gave his best in everything he did for his profession and for his community. To deal with the sudden loss of your loved one is extreme and hard. I trust that memories of the times you spent together will heal your sorrow. May you find solace with the passage of time. You are in my thoughts and prayers. My deepest condolences to Joan, Kristen and Tyler for your loss.
We are heart broken to hear about the sudden passing of our nephew Ian. A good son, brother, husband and father. He left us too young, too soon. We cherish good memories of times together with him. R. I. P. Uncle William & Aunt Louise
Ian was my eldest cousin. After Cheng family moved to Canada and our family to Texas, our families have stay in close contact. Ian first visited Houston in 1982 and on other occasions. He rarely missed a family (Chien) get together. Ian's mom (Aunt Olive) and my mom, Jean, were the two eldest Chien sisters and they were close until their last days. Ian's sudden passing brings back sad memories. Ian will be dearly missed!
Ian was the oldest cousin in our generation from the Chien family. He was always like a big brother to me growing up in Taiwan. His unexpected passing brought back memories of my mom's unexpected passing in 2004. My heart aches for Ian's family. Nothing can prepare someone from an unexpected passing of a love one. I'm keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. I wish I could be there to comfort you as you grieve. With all my love.
Mr. Cheng and his family have always been wonderful to my family and I will forever be gracious of his generosity and dedication to his passion in sport. Condolences to Ian and his family.

I cannot imagine how you are coping, but please know that there are many people sharing your sorrow and holding you in our hearts. My deepest condolences to you and your children.
Ivan was my cousin. We had been in contact quite often in Canada before my family and I left for Europe 20 years ago. I always wanted to meet up again, but this wish became impossible after November 11, 2019. Ivan was a kind-hearted big brother to me. I have never even seen him angry before. He was patient and worked very meticulously. I remember that I felt safe sitting in his car whenever he was driving, he was never in a hurry. I am so sad to lose him and I am praying for him. I offer my most sincere condolences to Joan and their children.
