Doris Aileen Strickland

November 30, 2020

Of London, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 30, 2020, in her 93rd year. She will be dearly missed by her children: Paul (Janice), Martha Chouffot, Carol Hemphill (Ron), Mark (Sascha), David (Ann), and Peter (Cathy); grandchildren: Daniel, Pierre (Sarah) and Jean-Luc Chouffot, Jeff (Rachel) and Michael Hemphill and Aileen (née Hemphill) Mendola (Blaine), Tessa and Ben, Sarah, Matthew and Adam; and her great-grandson, Brody Mendola. Dear sister of Mary Edgar and Louise (Bill) Marshall. Predeceased by her husband, Ross; parents, John and Margaret Bowman, of Brussels; sister, Isabel Elston; brother, Jim Bowman; brothers-in-law, Bill Elston and Mait Edgar; grandson, Jordan Strickland; and son-in-law, Jacques Chouffot.

Doris was born in Morris Township, in Huron County. Family connections with the Bowman family remained a strong part of her life, even when she settled in Windsor, and then in London, to raise a family with Ross. Her love of golf was legendary. She was a longtime member of Sunningdale Golf & Country Club, where she scored three of the four holes-in-one of her golfing career. She continued to stay active with her golf until she was 90; was a member of the seniors’ exercise group at Western for many years; and took long, fast walks in her neighbourhood, and then later, around the paths at Amica London. She and Ross valued education; and she was proud to join the rest of the family as a graduate from Western University, in 1992, when she was 64 years old. She was a long-term member of First-St. Andrew’s United Church, and a former member of the Western University Senior Alumni Club and The May Court Club of London. She felt lucky to have travelled the world with Ross through the Elderhostel program and to have been able to see so many things and places during her very rich life. Doris inspired her family and friends with her positive attitude and spunk and she will continue to be an inspiration to her children and grandchildren for the years to come.

Special thanks to the staff at Amica London and the Palliative Care Outreach Team who helped make her final days comfortable. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Doris’s life will take place when circumstances permit. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Doris are asked to consider the Jordan Strickland Family Fund – YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, the Children’s Health Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Doris was an inspiration to me on the golf course. We played several times together when I first joined Sunningdale in 2003, and I was amazed at the speed she walked at. I could barely keep up, and often told her she was my role model. Her determination and positive attitude in facing trials was legendary. RIP Doris

I didn't know Doris and Ross personally but, I know my Mother Fran King would want to express her condolences. I have heard their names a number of times. My parents Roy and Fran King were long time members of Sunningdale. Unfortunately my mother now has dementia and is not able to express her condolences herself. Condolences to the family and sorry for your loss!

~ Rae McKenna for Frances King

I have many fond memories of spending time at the Strickland house as a teenager. Looking back, I am not sure how Doris so capably managed such a large family and all the demands that came along with that. She almost never sat down and was always on the go. I know her life positively impacted many people, and my sincerest condolences to the Strickland family on your loss.

As mentioned by several others, I also knew Doris through golf at Sunningdale. She truly was amazing! Most of us could hardly keep up with her at her walking pace! I also remember seeing her and Ross at so many other sporting events...they loved life and, I think, lived it to the fullest. I shall remember her as an intelligent, caring, active lady who was a joy to be around. My condolences to all her family members.

Our condolences to the Strickland family on the passing of your mother/grandmother. Doris was an inspiration to many on the golf course at Sunningdale. I met Doris just a few years ago and enjoyed chatting with her in the clubhouse. Remarkable woman!

~ Barb and Peter Aharan

Our caring thoughts are with you in your sorrow. It seems just the other day that as a teen I would pop in after school with Carol and have a short visit with Mrs. Strickland. Your mom was such an determined, organized and compassionate woman. She always had energy for her loving family, friends and community. She was always so proud and smiled widely when giving updates of all her kids, their spouses and grandkids. I can can not imagine how many steps her Fitbit would record but she was an inspiration to many with her get up and go while fulling engaging in life. What a lovely story on the Jordan Strickland Family Fund of her participation this past September for the fundraiser. She will be missed. May an abundance of fond memories sustain and comfort you and bring peace. Maureen and Craig Wood and The entire Richardson family

I always thought of this great lady as "Martha's mom", and so will still use this phrase for my tribute. My best "Martha's mom" story is the day that she came to Colborne Street School as a motivational runner for the Grade 7/8 class...when she was 78!!! So many of the teens were reluctant cross country trainees, that Martha felt compelled to add her mom into the mix as the rabbit and pacesetter, and -we hope - a point of pride and inspiration. She was a powerhouse, and an inspiration to all who knew her. The rest of us can only hope for such a meaningful series of chapters on this planet.

~ Kim Craig

Doris and I met at the Fowler -Kennedy clinic - her knee, my shoulder. We met again at First St. Andrews early church service and maintained contact for several years. She was a dynamic woman who was pleasant and put all her energy into anything she did. She will be sorely missed. Sympathy to the family.
