Ruth Mary Amy (née Houghan) Burton

Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at the age of 93. Ruth was a caring mother, grandmother, and friend, who sadly left this world and went to her heavenly home. Ruth was born in Toronto, Ontario, on July 28, 1927, to Ruth Mary Houghan and Joseph Van Nostrand Houghan. Once she graduated high school, she started a career as an accountant, teacher’s assistant, and traffic controller for the store, Towers. Joy in Ruth’s life came through her participation in her childhood church St. John’s of Norway, reading mystery novels, being a guide leader, sinking the front cup in beer pong with her grandchildren, and spending time with her loved ones. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Beth Summerfield, and her grandchildren: Matthew Summerfield, Walter Summerfield, Robert Summerfield, and Katie Summerfield. She was predeceased by her parents Joseph and Ruth Houghan; and her ex-husband Marcus Burton. Ruth was loved by many for her genuine spirit, generosity, kindness, and cheerful smile in making anyone that came into her home feel like family. She was the rock and backbone of the family, which can never be replaced or forgotten. Ruth was always a mother and grandmother first and foremost. Our family gives thanks to God for all the memories we were able to make in the time we had together, and we find comfort and peace in knowing that she will always be with us. A graveside service will be held at St. John’s York Mills Anglican Church Cemetery, 19 Don Ridge Drive, Toronto on Thursday, April 1, 2021, at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Ruth are asked to consider the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
