Frederick ‘Gary’ Hewitt

It is with heavy hearts we announce the unexpected passing of our lovely Gary at Victoria Hospital on Monday, March 29, 2021, at the age of 78. Beloved husband of 31 years, of Annette (Vandelaar) Hewitt and dearly loved father of Todd Hewitt and Cory (Rachel) Hewitt. Grandfather of Crystal and Chantelle; and great-grandfather of Stephanie and Noah. Dear and loyal brother of sisters, Donna Hewitt and Sam Fletcher (Dave). Gary was also uncle to several nieces and nephews. Gary was born in London on March 12, 1943, son of the late Marie Lenore Hewitt, Frederick George Hewitt and stepmother Molly Hewitt. Gary was a loyal and devoted father, husband, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend to those close to him. He loved Annette fiercely. Gary, a dangerously handsome and “enthusiastic” young man with a dazzling smile, finally found his calling at the City of London Fire Department, where he was fondly nicknamed “Cricket”. He eventually made his way to the rank of Captain to the best crew out there, of which he was very proud. Gary, a well-organized leader, always had a second (or third… or fourth) plan to ensure care, safety and success for those on his team, both personally and professionally. Gary was proud to be a firefighter. His garage was a testament to how meticulous he was in everything he set out to do. Cremation has already taken place. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 from 1:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London. Gary would appreciate firefighters in dress uniform. Registration is required to attend.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Gary are asked to consider the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Please note: as per the directive of the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, attendance numbers will be restricted. Please be aware that COVID-19 protocols are in place which may preclude some from being able to attend and masks are mandatory.

My deepest condolences to The Hewitt family. Gary was my first branch man when I was a probationary fire fighter and led me in my first fire. While I only worked with him for my first three months at old station 2, he was a good mentor and a calming influence on a wide eyed rookie.

My dear Annette, I live across the street on Montebello Drive where Gary's mom Marie used to live. Marie and I became great friends and we enjoyed getting together to chat and it was always delightful when both of you dropped in while I was there. Please accept my condolences on the loss of your husband Gary. His passing has prompted many memories to-day - most with laughter and a few with tears. You too will be doing this for the next while and it will help to give you some peace as you deal with your loss.

Gary & I met at Haskett Motors in early 1960's.We had many fun times working side by side. Gary was always ready to have fun. Mr. Haskett was noted for coming into the shop. turning off the lights to save hydro. Gary decided to get candles, put them on every mechanics shop bench vise. Next time the lights went out, Gary lit all the candles. Mr. Haskett saw this, turned and left and that ended the turning off of the lights. Many good memories of Gary Sorry for your loss. Harv

Found memories of watching the sunrise over Coloniel Talbot Rd, morning coffee in front of Engine 11, chatting about nothing and everything.
