Joan (née Smith) Pogue

August 26, 2021

Peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Parkwood Institute, in her 87th year. Born on November 13, 1934, to Bob and Rubina Smith, Joan was raised in Blackpool and then Liverpool, England. At the age of 13, she immigrated to London, Ontario, and lived in Belmont for the next 70 years. Joan learned to bake from her mother-in-law, Helen Pogue. She entered local fairs and was a yearly prizewinner. She will be fondly remembered for her pies, butter tarts, and sweet pickles.

Joan was a graduate of the London Normal School and spoke fondly of her challenges and accomplishments of teaching in a one-room school house. Later, she taught at Belmont Public School until its closure in 1969. Joan was devoted to her husband, the late Frank (2006) and supported him in the family business, Automatic Heating and Cooling. At the age of 50, Joan returned to school and became a successful real estate agent. Joan will also be remembered for her artistic talents; she loved painting, sewing and gardening.

We bid farewell to this lovely woman. She was proud of her heritage and her family, strong and stubborn, kind and having a sense of humour to the end. Joan will be greatly missed by Paul and Diana, Ann, Greg; her grandchildren: Dayna, Stephanie, and Jordan, Christopher, Erin, Elizabeth, and Robert; and great-grandchildren: Ruby, Georgia, and Levi.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Parkwood Institute – Palliative Care staff who were exceptionally kind and compassionate.

A private funeral service will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London. Private interment to follow at Dorchester Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Joan are asked to consider Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or Parkwood Institute – Palliative Care Program.

Dear Ann and family. I offer my since sympathies on the loss of your mother, who was a great influence in your life and who will be very much missed. Frank and Joan Pogue were the best neighbours .. to say the least Welcomed us into their home ;treated us like family They demonstrated what a normal small town family was about Taught us a lot about the value of the simplest things They'd experienced a full life of its ups and downs , raised A great family , thru life's challenges ,rising above everything with honour, Integrity and true fun spirits Our younger growing family was extremely fortunate , when fate Had us move into the house beside the Pogue residence ( will always be referred to as the Pogue house dearly) We have what seems , as a lifetime of memories , in the friendship span of years we had beside these wonderful people The laughter .!!., hearing the roaring of laughter .. Calling each other Newt and Strawberry jokingly .. a 'vigorously stirred' social Rum and coke ... the love for family A simple Thank you could never cover how greatful our family Is to The Pogue's ... Stand up good people Miss my daily friendship with Frank, with my whole heart The world was never the same after he passed suddenly Now with Joans passing , .. The end of an era somewhat These great people are larger than life .. they gave more to This earth than anyone could ever imagine Thanks , Rest In Peace Frank and Joan ; together forever .. can imagine You both dancing , laughing ,.. and being together Our highest respects to The family, and our sincere condolences , shared sadness ... and celebration of these great people lost to us Gone but never forgotten ; Love and Respects always from your friends , the Sop family , West st , Belmont ( we live beside the Pogue house proudly )
