Shirley Maxine (née Hughes) Hawley
September 25, 2021
Beloved mother and grandmother, died peacefully at LHSC – University Hospital on Saturday, September 25, 2021. Born in Chatham on February 7, 1930 to Thomas and Adeline (née Broadbent) Hughes. The youngest of three daughters, Shirley is predeceased by her sisters Marjorie Hughes and Sister Barbara Hughes. With her dear husband Noble Ross Hawley and two sons, Shirley moved to London in 1972 where she worked as a Registered Nurse in the position of Director of Nursing Care at the Dearness Home LTC facility. Shirley is predeceased by the love of her life, Ross Cecil Hawley; her youngest son, Michael Hawley; and brother-in-law Donald Hawley. Left to mourn her loss and miss her dry sense of humour and quick wit is her eldest son Douglas Hawley, along with his wife Teresa (née Paul) Hawley, sister-in-law Louise Hawley, and numerous grandchildren. Shirley loved to spend time with her family at their cottage in Johnstone’s Harbour. Along with her husband, Shirley was passionate about raising money for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Serving as Queen in her local chapter #111 of Daughters of the Nile in 2002 was a special highlight for Shirley, with many dear friends made over the years through this philanthropic organization, and that of the Eastern Star. Shirley was an enthusiastic traveler in her later years and saw much of the world, with her Christmas tree decorated with ornaments from Africa, Australia and Alaska, to name a few. A funeral service will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Thursday, September 30, 2021 at 3:00 p.m., with visitation two hours prior. The family welcomes those who are unable to attend, to participate in the service via livestream. Registration is required to attend the visitation and funeral service, or to view the livestream.

Doug and family I wish to express my sympathy to you at Shirley’s death. Shirley lived with us for a few years. We too enjoyed her humour and appreciated her ability to live life as it is each moment. May happy moments fill your recalling of her life.
Dear Jared and Family, Our deepest sympathy for the loss of your Grandma Shirley. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Patty & Jeff
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.We had a lot of good times with the Shriners traveling to different parades. You will have great memories.
My parents knew Shirley and Ross for years through Shrine and Nile. Even as a child I knew it was going to be fun times if she was at an event and as an adult, I had so many laughs with her and would always make sure I was sitting near her as to not miss anything. She worked tirelessly for her charities and nothing kept her down long. She was tiny but mighty. Rest well Shirley, you earned all good things. Condolences to her family and friends

Dear Teresa, Doug and family, I had the pleasure of working with PQ Shirley at Daughter of the Nile in London in 2006, we were on the same committee. She was always up for a laugh and could be relied on to "upset the apple cart". Her sense of humour and jokes will be greatly missed. May God comfort you at this difficult time and give you His peace. Hugs, Lucy Hesse PQ.
