Dr. Jack Howan Jung, M.D., F.R.C.P.(C), A.B.M.G., F.C.C.M.G., Professor Emeritus of Western University
September 24, 1952 - July 24, 2025
It is with deep sadness that the Jung family mourns the passing of Dr. Jack Howan Jung at home with his family on July 24, 2025. He leaves his wife, Eleanor, and their children Jaclyn (John) and granddaughter Jordan; Jillian (David) and granddaughter Margot.
Jack was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on September 24, 1952 to parents Kwong Yook Jung and Jin Toy Jung alongside his three older sisters, Joan, Pauline, and Pearl. Jack came from humble beginnings; his parents ran a small grocery store and had no higher education. Despite this, Jack completed a B.Sc at the University of British Columbia before attending the University of Calgary for medical school. It was at medical school that he met Eleanor, and they were married on October 10, 1981 in Vancouver.
Jack completed his residency in pediatrics at University of Calgary, followed by a fellowship in medical genetics at the University of Washington in Seattle. After that, Jack and Eleanor moved to London, Ontario to pursue both of their medical careers. Jack began to build a program at the London Health Sciences Center in medical genetics. He eventually became Director of the Regional Medical Genetics program for Southwestern Ontario, which included outreach clinics to northern Ontario for which Jack traveled to meet with patients in remote areas. He was highly respected in the medical community. He also had a successful academic career at the University of Western Ontario where he taught and mentored medical students and residents. But his greatest satisfaction came from taking care of patients and their families, often with complex medical genetics. The countless pediatric patients gave him an empathy and perspective that permeated all of his relationships with love and understanding.
Outside of medicine, Jack had many passions and hobbies. He combined his love of skiing and teaching by being a ski school instructor at Boler Mountain for over 25 years. Jack was an avid fly fisherman and he experienced nature through fishing trips throughout Canada. He cherished his community of fellow fishermen at the Caledon Mountain Trout Club. He was also a dedicated golfer and formed many wonderful friendships at the London Hunt & Country Club. Jack was fortunate to have traveled extensively throughout his life with friends and family. He loved food, and cooking for others was something that he enjoyed immensely. Jack considered his friends in the London community and beyond to be part of his family.
After retiring from medicine, Jack pivoted into an entirely different career and became an investment advisor. He was highly involved with philanthropy and sat on the board of the London Community Foundation for many years. Although Jack’s career was full of highlights, he counted his family among his greatest successes. Jack was proud to have raised two wonderful daughters with his wife of 44 years. More recently, the addition of two granddaughters brought even greater joy to the family, and Jack was thrilled to get to spend time with Jordan and Margot.
Jack’s kindness and generosity left a lasting impact on those who knew him; his love of family and those around him was immeasurable. Dealing with pancreatic cancer in his last months only sharpened Jack’s mental strength and calmness, and he remained focused on gratitude for a well lived and prosperous life. His self-peace and calmness was inspiring to those around him and his determination to live life to its fullest remained until the end.
A visitation will be conducted at Westview Funeral Home, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, Ontario on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 between 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2025 at The London Hunt & Country Club, 1431 Oxford Street West, London at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to some of the charitable foundations that were important to Jack, namely the London Community Foundation, the Children’s Health Foundation, or Western University.

My most sincere condolences to Eleanor, the girls (women) and Jack’s extended family. I first met Jack through Eleanor, who I worked with at London Psychiatric Hospital on the Geriatric Unit, in the 80’s. Eleanor and Jack were so hospitable and had me over for lunch which Jack and Eleanor prepared with great skill and enthusiasm. The one bit of a glitch was that Jack came home from skiing and could not get the zipper of his ski jacket undone. We called my husband John over and Jack was so humorous and good natured while he was trapped in his warm cocoon. I am not sure that we ever got the zipper working. What I remember is the love, laughter and camaraderie between Jack and Eleanor. My deepest sympathies again. Rebecca
Dr Jung was a wonderful and kind teacher at Western Medical School. He is remembered fondly by his students of all disciplines.
Dr Jung was the Honorary Class President for Meds '89 at UWO. On behalf of the class, I share our fond memories and our thanks to Jack. Our best wishes to his family.
So sorry to see Jack’s obituary. He was a great doctor, father and husband. He was so kind to me. We are back in London so if you have time Ellie let’s meet up Jan
To Eleanor and family. Jack was an inspiration to so many, and his presence will be deeply missed. Perry holds dear the memories of time spent fishing with him—moments filled with warmth, wisdom, and laughter. Jack’s passing is a profound loss to our community. Please accept our deepest sympathy and know that our thoughts are with you during this difficult time. Perry and Cindy-Lee

Dearest Eleanor, Jaclyn, Jillian, and the rest of the family, please accept my deepest condolences on Jack’s passing. I wish I could be there to console you. I miss the gatherings we had; unfortunately, they were too few and far between. However, whenever Jack and I met, we could speak our minds at a pub somewhere in Vancouver, and I will never forget those special moments. I will miss him very much. Ken @ Bangkok
Dear Eleanor and family, My deepest condolences on the passing of your dear Jack. Jack was an amazing friend to so many, and he had the ability to make one feel truly special, and that the small things mattered. He will sadly not see old age, and so may we all be inspired by his curiosity, and never ending desire to try new things and make new connections. He will be deeply missed.
Dear Eleanor and girls. I was very sadden to hear of Jack’s passing. I had the pleasure of getting to know Jack and the girls while I was your office nurse. He always had an infectious smile and time to chat. Dave and myself are sending love and prayers. May your many memories sustain you all during this time
Dr. Huang and family. I am extremely saddened to hear about the passing of Jack. He was such a kind soul and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. You all are in my thoughts and prayers during this time.
I have fond memories of Jack coming to use the hose at our house to clean his Porsche and then accept an invitation to dinner. He was my Dad's colleague at the Genetics Centre. I remember him being a soft-spoken, kind man who was always a welcomed guest . Take care Jung family, share the stories about Jack with each other.
I had the privilege of knowing Jack and having him work for me at London Source for Sports. He truly was a “Jack of all trades”. We enjoyed many a day on the ski slopes at Boler as well as up north in Collingwood, and even a few rounds of golf at the Hunt Club. My thoughts and prayers go out to you his family during this difficult time. Safe travels my friend.
Dear Eleanor and family. I reviewed the obituary pages in the G&M and immediately recognized the name Jack Jung. In reading it over, I realized that this is the same Jack I first met in Calgary on the first day that I arrived at Kananaskis Hall to check in in 1975. Jack, and another graduate student from Vancouver (David Piercey) were there on their first day. We chatted and quickly formed a friendship that lasted for those few graduate school years. Jack drove me on one of the first weekends to Banff and I will never forget the awesome slendour of he Rockies as we headed over Scott's Hill. For a boy from Montreal, this view was unforgettable! I am so sorry that we lost touch over the past almost 50 years :(. I know that I met you also in Calgary. Again, my sincere condolences to you Eleanor and family. I would love to hear from you at some time if you would like although I am not sure how we would that since I cannot jeave any details in thi message. Regards. Frank.
Our deepest condolences Eleanor, Jaclyn, Jillian and families. We were so saddened to hear the news of Jack’s passing. We have fond memories of neighbourhood gatherings, and our children remember his volunteer work at Camp Queen Elizabeth. He led a truly inspiring life, and we hope that you find comfort in the wonderful memories you have. Our thoughts are with you.
My condolences to Dr. Huang and her family - I'm very sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you.
I knew Dr Jung only briefly through the London Hunt Club, but I owe my career in genetics to his work establishing the medical genetics labs in London. Dr Jung always took interest in my research when we spoke, and the small bit of mentorship I got from him meant the world to me.
I'm very sad to hear of Jack's passing. I worked with him weekly in 1999-2000 when I was a medical student. He was an amazing teacher - always open and positive, willing to spend the time needed to nurture a very young trainee. He was very influential in my choice to pursue a career in pediatrics (I now work at SickKids in Toronto). His giving nature and care for his patients will resonate for generations to come through his students and trainees. May his memory be a blessing.
We are very sorry and sad to hear about Jack. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole family.
Jack Jung .. one of London’s classiest men. His fashionable style, magnetic charisma, hearty handshake and that infectious smile were some of the traits that one would not forget after meeting him in and around our community in a variety of places. Jack was everywhere! We are fortunate that he resided here in London and grateful for all that he and his family contributed to many causes in their own unique quiet way. My deepest condolences to his loving Eleanor and family. May his memory be eternal.
Both of us have very fond memories of Jack from golf and social events at the Hunt Club. He truly was a renaissance man with a huge range of interests and areas of expertise yet he always had time for a friendly chat. Our condolences to Eleanor and family.
I knew Jack as an exceptional colleague and friend as a member of the department of paediatrics at Western University and as a specialist in medical genetics. Jack was an exceptional clinical teacher able to relate to medical students, residents, basic scientists and interdisciplinary team members while ensuring his patients and families remained at the center of their focus. Overtime, Jack built with others a, comprehensive regional genetics service accessible to all children and families residing in southwestern Ontario and many in Ontario's north. This essential service remains an enduring gift to the people living in the southwestern region and a remarkable example of the value of interdisciplinary team based care. As others have pointed out Jack held many interests beyond medicine and took the time to give back to his community in an number of ways. To me Jack managed during his days on this earth to show us all how to live and in his last days even how to die with a grateful heart. I and I suspect all the people who knew Jack will deeply miss him. My heart felt condolences to Eleanor and his beautiful family.
I am so very sorry to hear of Dr Jungs passing. I was introduced to Jack at the Club by my late Father , Dr John P Sweeney. Jack was always friendly and engaging. He was always happy to chat and catch up either during or after a game of golf. He will be missed…On behalf of the entire Sweeney family, I would like to pass on our most sincere condolences…
We are deeply saddened to hear of Jack's passing. He was a handsome man, both inside and out - someone whose warmth, charm, and infectious smile drew people in wherever he went. We fondly remember the wonderful times spent together at the Caledon Mountain Trout Club and the privilege to be welcomed by him and Eleanor at the London Hunt Club in 2024. Our heartfelt condolences to Eleanor and the entire family. Drew & Elisabeth Foley
My deepest condolences to Eleanor, Jillian and family.

I am so sorry Eleanor to hear about Jack. I send my love and sympathy to you and your daughters. Jack was such a happy looking man and in spite of of all his accomplishments, he loved to chat with Red about skiing. He is now at peace
Dear Jung Family: I’m so sorry for your loss. Dr. Jung was a truly incredible man. I’ll always remember how he showed up to every Pearson event, cheering Jillian and me on, and in more recent years, how much I enjoyed running into him out for a round at the Hunt. Thinking of you all and sending big hugs.
I have had the privilege of knowing Jack since 1984, when I came to London to do a senior resident year in Paediatrics as having trained in the US I needed an additional year in Canada to qualify for licensure. Jack was an enthusiastic and talented junior faculty member who was an exceptional teacher and clinician. Over the years since we returned to London in 1988 I have known Jack as a colleague, mentor and friend. He was a superb educator and an outstanding clinician who established a genetics service across our region and ensured that medical genetics was a linchpin of the medical school curriculum. His vision in creating a regional service with close ties to Windsor was an example that other services and Departments have emulated and was an early example of close to home care and of putting the patient and family's needs first. He will be sorely missed and sincerest condolences to his family.
My sincere sympathies to Dr. Jung’s family . Jack was an esteemed colleague. His empathy and counselling to the families of severely disabled children was a unique talent . His contribution to Medical Genetics in Canada will be an epitaph.
Dear Eleanor, Michael and I were very saddened to learn of your loss. Jack was one of our favorite members of the Trout Club and we will always remember and miss his infectious smile especially when he was headed to the ponds with his rod in hand! You were such an elegant couple who contributed so much to all dinners and events at the club. We hope you will continue to come to the Club and celebrate yours and Jack's long history there. We hope the pain of your loss will be helped if only a little by all the wonderful memories you shared with Jack. Our deepest sympathy and thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Michael & Cally
My heartfelt condolences. I last saw Jack a few weeks ago at the Trout Club and he seemed very much at peace. I’m so grateful to have had that last warm conversation. Jack was such a fine angler. We dined together at several Opening Weekends and I will cherish the memories of time spent with him. Tight Lines Jack!
My deepest condolence to Jack's family. He showed a genuine interest in my granddaughter's medical condition and always asked for her. An infectious smile! Sending prayers and best thoughts. Mike O'Hagan
Dear Eleanor, Donna and I were heartbroken to learn of Jack’s passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Jack was an amazing man who contributed so much and made our world a better place because of his many contributions. He was a stalwart of our medical community, an impactful Board member at the London Community Foundation, an avid sportsman and most importantly a family man. He loved you deeply. We celebrate Jack’s life and thank you for sharing him with us. Hugs, Donna and Bob
I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Jung who was a well respected clinician of medical genetics, teacher, mentor to hundreds of students. Above all he was a devoted husband to my doctor friend Dr. Eleanor Huang, father and grandfather. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad difficult time. He will be missed.
To Eleanor, Jaclyn and Jillian – Lisa and I share in your sadness in the passing of Jack. Other than his family, I may be the person that has known Jack the longest. We shared a coming of age trip to California after second year university, we were Best Man for each other’s wedding , we celebrated Jack’s 60th birthday on a Pebble Beach golf holiday. I like to think we were each other’s best friend. Although our careers caused us to be separated geographically, we always kept in touch. I marveled at how Jack was able to juggle a successful professional career, his many hobbies and still was able to be the family man that could find the time to attend his daughters’ summer camps. His calm and low-key mannerism was in inspiration to me. Jack will be missed, but will not be forgotten.
A truly special man who enriched the lives of all who shared his journey, be they family, friends, colleagues or patients. A highly regarded geneticist with a part time job at Source for Sports. Doesn't get cooler than that. It speaks to his empathy, collegiality and humility. I was most fortunate to share numerous great bottles of wine(his), mediocre bottles (mine) and engaging conversations with him at many dinners. Condolences to the family. A life well lived.
So very sorry for your loss. I only got to spend a short time getting to know Jack, but during that time we shared our love for science and food. Wishing his family peace and our prayers are with you.
Jacks passing is a great loss to his family, the community and to his friends. He will be sorely missed and prayers for the family.
