Maria Serratore (née Martellotti)
November 25, 2025
It is with profound sadness and love, we share that our cherished mother peacefully, at St. Joseph’s Hospice, departed this world. Her loving daughters were a constant, comforting presence, remaining by her side until she took her final breath.
Maria was born in Curinga, Catanzaro, Italy. Beloved wife and soulmate of the late Francesco for 56 years. Treasured mother of Popina (Daniella) (Guido) and Isabelle (Lisa) (Edward). Adored Nonna of Sonia (Nicholas), Jonathan (Joanne), Jason and Justin. Much loved Bisnonna of Alexander, Nicolas and Lorenzo.
Maria was the last remaining sibling in her family tree. Predeceased by her parents Pasquale and Isabella Martellotti. Predeceased by her brothers, sisters and their spouses, Concetta Gallo (Vincenzo), Custodia DePace (Placido), Giovanni Martellotti (Maria), Vincenza Zarola (Pietro), Annunziata Monteleone (Giacomo), Francesco Martellotti (Maria), Lina Curcio (Sebastiano), Pino Martellotti (Vittorina), Vittorio and Yolanda Martellotti.
Predeceased by her nephew Pasqualino DePace, nieces Susan Martellotti and Catherine Cunsolo.
Also predeceased by her father-in-law Pietro Serratore and mother-in-law Ippolita. Sister-in-law of Lina, Raffaele (Gina), Giuseppe (Christina), Concetta, Giovanni (Santina). Predeceased by brothers-in-law Pietro, Dominic and Mike and sister-in-law Angelina.
She will be dearly missed by many nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy, the U.S., and Australia, which she adored each and every one.
Before settling in Canada, Maria was in school aspiring to become a seamstress. Her embroidery was truly a work of art. Maria immigrated to Canada in 1956. Her new life became complete when she met Francesco, the love of her life. Six short months later, they were married in February of 1957. For nearly three decades, she dedicated her working life to serving the Sisters of St. Joseph, at St. Mary’s Hospital, a place she held dearly in her heart. She often expressed that she had the best job. Maria was an excellent cook and baker. Her lasagna was the highlight of any family gathering. Maria had a love for life and was involved in many pursuits. Once retired, she and Francesco shared a joy in traveling, often visiting Arizona, Venezuela, and Acapulco. She had an impeccable sense of style and loved fashion. She was our fashionista. Her life was guided by a deep and abiding faith in God. Her faith was a constant source of strength and comfort. Maria found great joy and fellowship as a member of St. Mary’s Rosary Group. She had a beautiful spirit of service and generosity, always ensuring everyone felt welcome in her home and had an unwavering commitment to helping others. She was a proud volunteer with Dearness Home for many years, after retiring. For Maria, family was everything. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life, bringing her profound joy and pride.
The journey was long, but she was uplifted by the kindness of the many wonderful people she met along the way. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sister Dorothy for her presence, comfort, and friendship during this time. As her life on earth neared its end, it felt fitting that she was cared for at St. Joseph’s Hospice. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Tancio and Dr. Katarina Andrejevic. Your support and compassion have been a great comfort to us. To the nurses, PSW’s, and all staff involved in her care, we truly believe that you were our angels on Earth, offering solace and strength. We appreciate the help from Ontario Health at Home and VON. A special thank you to ProResp and the community paramedics, offering their support and professionalism.
Maria leaves behind a legacy of love, strength and warmth that will continue to guide all who were fortunate enough to know her. Nonna, this Christmas, we imagine you with Nonno and all of your brothers and sisters, laughing, and wrapped in the warmth and love you always gave us. Like Nonna would say, “Buon giorno e buona sera, con sorriso.” Un grande abbraccio a Nonno. Ti voglio tanto, tanto bene.
The funeral service will be celebrated privately in the chapel of Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Centre with entombment to follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery & Holy Family Chapel Mausoleum. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Maria, are asked to consider St. Joseph’s Hospice or St. Mary’s Catholic Church Restoration Fund.
