Mary Varkey, M.B.B.S., D. CH.

August 29, 1933 - February 7, 2026

Survived by her children Renu and Joe; grandchildren Emily (Trace) and Liam; her sisters Saramma John (India) and Dr. Aleyamma Joseph (UK); sisters-in-law Susamma John and Saramma Jacob (India); many nieces and nephews and dear friends all around the world.  Predeceased by her husband Dr. George P. Varkey, parents Thomas and Sosamma Joseph, brother J. Thomas, sister Annamma Joseph and son-in-law Dr. Mark Maslovich.

Mary had a deep and practical approach to her Christian faith and served as the anchor and cornerstone of her family, giving her children and grandchildren both roots and wings. She adored her grandchildren and spent time with them at every opportunity.  In her life, Mary modeled hard work, resilience, gratitude, love and kindness to all people and animals, especially dogs.  Mary was a big believer in being charitable and helping those in need.  A voracious reader and excellent Scrabble player, Mary also loved classical music and traditional hymns, playing the keyboard, attending plays in London and Stratford, and hosting evenings with friends.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at University, St. Joseph’s and Victoria Hospitals, as well as the Parkwood Institute.

The family will have a private visitation and prayer, to be followed by a Service of Remembrance in the early summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverside United Church (London) Memorial Fund or Doctors Without Borders.

Dr Mrs Varkey had been our great support ever since we arrived in London Ontario. Dr and Dr Mrs Varkey had been our mentors academically and in life in general. Any problem we had, she was the first one we went to for guidance. A great soul and a kind person. We will miss her a lot.
