Audrey Evershed

Our sweet mother and grandmother, Audrey Evershed, whom we all loved and cherished so dearly, has been called to her eternal home, much later than she wanted, but before we were ready to let her go. In recent days she had been surrounded by family and loved ones, and she returned home peacefully, very early in the morning of Sunday, August 30, 2026, with her daughter Clare at her side.

Audrey was born in Peterborough, England almost 105 years ago! On December 25, 1921, to Lois Mary Cunnington and Ernest James Baxter. She was blessed to grow up in a faith-filled home where strong moral values were taught and practiced. She adored her parents and her siblings Roland, Elva, Edmund and Eunice. She shared a special bond with her mate, Eunice, with whom she lived for about 34 years after the passing of her beloved Bill.

Hers was a special love story: she saw her husband, William Frank Evershed, for the first time when he delivered a parcel to the dairy co-op where she worked. As fate would have it, they later met at a dance. They dated and fell in love, but their romance was interrupted by WWII. Bill served for three and a half years, during which they wrote to each other constantly. They married while Bill was on leave, and then after a further 10 months of Dad’s service, they began their life together.  They deeply loved one another. Audrey has been eagerly awaiting their reunion for about 37 years.

An important part of Audrey’s life was devoted to the service, often anonymously, of others. She had a passionate interest in family history, and she painstakingly researched hundreds of names on her family tree. This was in the days of sending letters to Somerset House in England to obtain birth certificates, marriage registrations and other vital statistics. She felt a deep personal connection to her ancestors.

She had a passion for knitting, and knitted thousands of blankets, scarves, hats and sweaters for many family members and friends. Her kind and loving heart was manifest as she knitted many, many baby hats for neonatal care units, hats and mitts for ladies that were being released from the Vanier Women’s Prison and for other charitable organizations. She was deeply patriotic and proud of her British heritage, supporting the war effort during WWII, working in the office of a munitions plant.

Fortuitously, Audrey first met missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and invited them to return when Bill was with her. Even though he said he would “get rid of them soon enough”, after a long discussion, the missionaries were invited to return. They soon joined the church and contributed to the church in many different capacities throughout their lives.

Audrey’s life was full of kind, encouraging words and deeds. She never spoke poorly of others. She was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ, and her faith in Him sustained her through daunting challenges, including the loss of her daughter Jane, her husband 37 years ago and her great-grandchildren Elise, Ellie and Ava. This same faith has sustained her in her challenges associated with aging; it enlivened her conviction in an afterlife, and it sustains her family’s anticipation and confidence in a happy reunion to come.

Audrey is predeceased by her daughter Jane, great-granddaughters Ellie, Ava, and Elise, and her husband William. She will be profoundly missed by her children Jonathan(Helga), Clare and Samantha and her grandchildren Jennifer(Brent), Emily(Dave), Matthew, Timothy(Lana), Rebekah(Jon), Megan(Ryan), Katharine, Chloe(Nicholas), Sarah, Seth(Chantal), Leah and Jared, William and Brittany and great grandchildren Isabella, Jacob and Clara, Benjamin, Marcus, Sylvia and Weston, Bodhi, Solène, Matthew and Jacob, Rachel and London, and Noah.

We love you with all our hearts and feel you are the perfect mother and grandma for our family.

Audrey requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to the Ward Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in her memory.

A Memorial Service will be conducted Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1139 Riverside Drive, London, ON.
