Karen Ellen Dyer

It is with deep sadness that the family of Karen Ellen Dyer announces her passing on September 17, 2026, at University Hospital in London, Ontario, following a long struggle with illness. Surrounded by those who loved her, Karen passed peacefully.

Karen was predeceased by her beloved parents, Mahlon and Barbara Dyer. She leaves behind her siblings, Scott, Charles, and Martha Dyer, as well as her many nieces and nephews, for whom she was a much-loved and devoted aunt.

Caring for others was at the heart of Karen’s life. She trained as a nurse at Fanshawe College and later continued her education at the University of Western Ontario, where she completed her degree in nursing. She went on to build a long and accomplished career at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, ultimately rising to the position of Director of Nursing for the Emergency Department.

Karen’s professional accomplishments were all the more remarkable because of the considerable health challenges she faced along the way. During her career, she struggled with a severe respiratory illness that resulted in numerous hospitalizations. Yet she persevered. Despite periods of serious illness, Karen continued her work, completed her nursing degree, and advanced into a leadership role. The determination and resilience she demonstrated throughout those years were characteristic of the way she approached so much of her life.

Her nursing career came to an unexpected end after she suffered a stroke, and she retired in 2013. After a lifetime spent caring for others, Karen continued to find pleasure in family, travel, and the companionship of her much-loved cat, Sally.

Karen loved to travel, but for her the journey could be every bit as important as the destination. One of her nieces still remembers taking a trip with Karen when she was a young girl. Like children everywhere, she repeatedly asked, “When are we going to get there?” Karen’s answer was always the same:

“Just enjoy the moment.”

It was simple advice, but it stayed with her niece. Today, with two children of her own, she still remembers those words and the aunt who taught her something important about appreciating where you are rather than always looking ahead to where you are going.

That memory captures something special about Karen.

She was a wonderful aunt who genuinely enjoyed spending time with her many nieces and nephews. She took them to plays, outings, and other special events, giving them not simply gifts but experiences—time together, adventures, conversations, and memories that have lasted into adulthood.

Karen’s life was marked by both accomplishment and adversity. She devoted her professional life to caring for others while facing serious health challenges of her own. She persevered, continued her education, became a leader in her profession, travelled, loved her family, and found joy in the experiences she shared with those around her.

Perhaps the words she once offered to a little girl impatient to reach her destination are also a fitting reflection on Karen’s own life:

Just enjoy the moment.

Those moments Karen shared with her family, friends, colleagues, patients, nieces and nephews became a lifetime of memories. They are her legacy, and they will be treasured by those who loved her.

Karen will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
