Peacefully at University Hospital embraced in the love of his family, on Sunday, May 11th, 2014, in his 85th year. Beloved husband of Petronella “Nel” (nee Alsemgeest) for 58 years. Loving father of Robert. Proud Opa of Emilie. Dear brother of Suzie (Casper) van der Helm and brother-in-law of Nico (Riet), Lenie (Jan), Piet, Wim (Jose), Cathy, Betty, Johan (Joke), Frans (Nel) and Everien. Devoted foster-father of 13 children. Godfather of David Alsemgeest and Wendy Brunner. Will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and friends both in Canada and in the Netherlands. Predeceased by brothers Rien (Gon), Jan (Gerarda), Geert, Joop (Katrien), Jacob, Jaap, and by in-laws Sjaan (Wim), Trudy, Ben and Sjaak. Tony and his new bride emigrated from The Netherlands the day after they married in 1956. He worked for the University of Western Ontario for over 30 years. Some of Tony’s passions included playing billiards with his buddies, watching the Leafs and Knights on TV and he especially enjoyed soccer – any soccer. Dutch International matches were his favourite – HUP HOLLAND HUP!! The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at ST. JOHN THE DIVINE PARISH, 390 Base Line Road West, London on Saturday, May 17th, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Private family interment at St. Peter’s Mausoleum at a later date. The family extend special thanks to the staff of the Cardiac C.C.U., especially to Ron and Sarah, for their care and support. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a donation in memory of Tony are asked to consider the Batten Disease Support and Research Association (Canada) or the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southwestern Ontario.

I'm going to miss you Opa, I will always remember the great times we had watching Hockey Night in Canada, cheering on the Leafs and yelling at the tv together. Sincerely Ryan.
Lieve Nel en Rob, Wij condoleren jullie met het verlies van jullie lieve man en vader Toon. Al die jaren dat wij in Canada kwamen, al sinds 1988, hebben wij jullie ontmoet en met veel plezier. "Toon en Nel", dat hoorde ook bij onze vakanties. De eerste keren, toen onze kinderen nog klein waren, gezellig in het zwembad. Garageverkopen, barbecues en etentjes, het komt allemaal weer boven. Veel sterkte en wij hopen jullie in september a.s. te ontmoeten als wij weer in Canada zijn. Liefs en groetjes, Jacques en Tineke en de kinderen.

His love and pride for you was so heart-warming and obvious. We will always remember his love, his friendship and all his jokes! Tante Nel, we missed the funeral but want you to know we always appreciated the good friendship you and Oom Tony had with our parents and the support you both gave to us as young girls. We have lots of good memories of ome Toon from the times we visited your home in Canada, but also when you and Ton were in Holland. The great memories your family gave to us as we grew up bring a smile to my face. That smile that ome Tony had is burned in my memory forever, because that is how I remember him.
