Anthony Vincent “Tony” Sammut

July 16, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tony Sammut, who died peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, in his 82nd year. He was born on August 11, 1943, in Birkirkara, Malta. Beloved husband and best friend to Carol (nee Smith) for 55 years. He was a devoted father to Mark (Jenn) Sammut and Carrie Sammut (Jim Park). Tony was a proud grandfather to Camryn Sammut, Jordyn Sammut, and Abby Thompson. He was a cherished brother and brother-in-law to the late Lora (late John) Bugeja of Malta, the late Carmel (Polly) Sammut of Malta, Mary Sammut of Malta, Doris (Frank) Mallia of Australia, Phyllis (Amabile) Borg of Malta, Joe Sammut of Malta, Helen (Emanuel) Cardona of Malta, Victoria (Victor) Caruana of Malta, the late Myrtle (late Jim) Hastings of Ilderton, Margaret (late Bill) Henderson of London, Bruce (Janet) Smith of St. Thomas, Eileen (Bob) McCoy of Komoka, Ralph (Marilyn) Smith of Mt. Brydges and Greg Smith of St. Thomas. He will be lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Guzeppi and Pawla (née Ciappara) Sammut, and his parents-in-law, James and Marion (née Collins) Smith.

Tony Sammut was a name that echoed through garages, tracks, and open roads alike. Shortly after immigrating to Canada in 1962, he began working for Murray’s Automatic Transmission, where he first met Doug Wheeler. Tony left Murray’s for a brief period to pursue his dream career as a heavy truck mechanic at Forest City International Trucks. When Murray’s became available to purchase in 1969, Tony returned to the business becoming partners with Doug where they established Murray’s as a reputable and trustworthy business known for its integrity. After Doug’s sudden death in December of 1995, Mark joined his father as his new partner in the business, which they continued to operate together until Tony’s death. Tony had racing in his blood. He began by racing motorcycles in Malta as a teenager. In the 1960s, Tony began building supermodified oval track race cars alongside Doug. He crewed for many drivers, notably John Norton and Harvey Lennox. Tony shared his passion with his son Mark, and they established Sammut Racing in 1982. Together, they raced go-karts and Can-Am midgets before realizing their dream of owning and racing a supermodified. The Sammut 78 has been competing on tracks across North America with the help of friends and family for the past 30 years. Tony left a lasting legacy in racing, and he will be greatly missed by the entire racing community. Tony was an avid motorcycle enthusiast who took great pride in his classic motorcycle collection. He could be found riding his snowmobile in the winter months with the Komoka Snow Riders.

He coached minor soccer for many years and played soccer himself well into his adult years. His love of the sport lives on through his children and grandchildren. He always gave back to the community by sponsoring youth sports. In the summer months, Tony could be found camping in his rebuilt 1978 GMC motorhome at both campgrounds and racetracks alike.

Anyone who knew Tony will never forget him. He lived his life to the fullest and on his own terms. He was a generous man who was always the first to step up and lend a hand. He did not mince his words and you always knew exactly where you stood with him. Known as a hard worker, Tony was never afraid of a challenge. His wicked sense of humour and wild spirit gave life to unforgettable stories that will be told for years to come. Tony was a one of a kind who will never be forgotten.

Friends and family will be received at Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2025 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Tony’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice can be made in Tony’s memory.

Mark and family. There will never be a better person in the world than your father. I felt his love and compassion for life when I got. He stands with God setting the stagger for the Earth and setting the injection for the universe 😔😢💕🏁

My condolences to the entire Sammut family. Tony was an exceptional human being. I’ll always remember his presence at the hockey rink in Oakridge at all those early morning practices and of course with him helping out at the games as well. As we became regular customers at Murray’s Transmission over the years he always made us a priority and we were very loyal as he was very dependable and trustworthy, a trait he has passed down to his son and all the employees at Murray’s. Tony’s legacy will continue through his family and there’s no doubt he’d be proud. Tony will be missed, but his memory will never fade. RIP Tony
