Bill Backhouse

October 23, 2026

Bill passed away on October 23, 2026, at University Hospital, London, Ontario, with his wife, Cynthia and good friends by his side, he was 68 years old.

Bill was a gentle and kind soul who approached life with compassion and grace. He had a quick dry wit, a strong sense of irony, and viewed life issues from a humorous perspective.

During the last years of his life, he became ill with cancer, and withdrew from social life. Through it all, he maintained his love of reading. He could always be found with a book on the go, and continued his weekly trips to the library.

His biggest enjoyment in life were the comforts of home and being with his family.

He reserved the most love and pride for his son Hayden. It is wonderful that Bill was able to see Hayden become the fine young man he is today. Bill lived to see Hayden graduate from Fanshawe College, and to have his dream job in his chosen career.

Bill also loved his “girls”, two rambunctious wonderful Brittany Spaniels, Ripley & Nora; they sat with him quietly throughout his illness and kept him company day and night.

Bill leaves behind his loving wife of 40 years, Cynthia Chan, and his son Hayden Backhouse.

He will be missed by sisters Constance Backhouse and Nancy Backhouse, brother-in-law Dave Chan; all his nieces and nephews: Diana Backhouse, Mark Feldthusen, Jacqueline LaBine, Joseph LeBine, Leah Chan and Jordan Chan.

Donations in memory of Bill can be made to the London Public Library.

A Celebration of Life will be held in early 2027, and will be announced at a later date.
