Brian James Kernaghan
April 22, 2026
Trusting in God through a 17-year journey with Alzheimer’s, Brian James Kernaghan went to rest with Him on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at the age of 72. Brian was a loving and supportive husband to Gillian since 1980 and a wonderful father to his sons Scott (Annette), Shaun (Sarah) and Glenn (Catherine). He was Papa to 6 grandchildren Archie, Brodie, Finley, Anna, Josie and Isla, a brother to Nancy Douglas (John), Craig (Melanie) and Gary (Jan), and an uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Brian loved spending time with his family, extended family and friends, both at home, at church, in Thornbury and on many family vacations. The countless hours driving the boat for his family and their friends were a joy to him. He enjoyed quiet time in the garden and serving at Byron Community Church. He worked at State Farm Insurance for over 30 years, having to leave early due to his illness. Many with whom he interacted have spoken of how respected Brian was and how he quietly helped many he encountered.
Brian will be remembered as a man of integrity, generosity, faith and having a great sense of honour. He left us too young due to his illness, but he lived with his illness with quiet dignity and trust.
The family wishes to express our thanks to the staff of Mount Hope and other caregivers who provided compassionate care to Brian over the last 10 years.
Visitation will be at Westview Funeral Home, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Sunday, May 3, 2026 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be at Westview on Monday, May 4, 2026 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Mount Hope through the St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation or to Byron Community Church.

These last few days have brought back many memories of my good friend Brian. From helping me buy an old boat to teach my kids waterskiing to traveling to a Carib Indian village with no electricity to build a small church. We played hockey together and holidayed to together. He was the first friend I took flying when I received my license. I was moved at the funeral by the maturity of his young men. While growing up I recall Brian's boys as high energy, fast paced, hockey competitive, etc... Brian's approach to life was more of a chill and gracious tone. It would seem that as they have grown into fine young men, they have truly benefitted from the balancing in some of their dad's approach to life. A funny last thing.. almost every time I think about decisions like replacing car tires or other equipment I adopt a simple method of decision making that Brian had enlightened me to. It is a small thing but it gives me a chuckle and a reminder of the warmth of a good friend. Blessings to his family.
My deepest condolences to Gillian and the whole family. One of the nicest guys I ever met. Was dealt a horrible hand and faced it with grit and grace. He will be remembered as a great family man and colleague to those closest to the family. Prayers for all of you.
Our deepest condolences to the Kernaghan family at this difficult time. We remember Brian’s wonderful sense of humour and dedication to his work during his time with State Farm. Thinking of you all and sending our deepest sympathy.
