Doris Arlene Fratesi-Murie

The sun has set on a beautiful and amazing life. Bravely and peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at University Hospital in her 98th year. Deeply missed as the loving wife of the late Duilio “Duke” Fratesi for over 50 years. Beloved by her second husband, the late Robert Murie, of 8 years. Cherished and adored mother of Debra Arlene Fratesi and Peter Brian (Barbara) Fratesi. Fondly remembered by her step-children Joyce Malmgren and Robert Murie Jr. Beloved grammy of Jasmyn (Joel) Rowley, Nylan (Rachel) Pozzo, Bryan Fratesi, and Jeffery Fratesi. Treasured great-grandmother “Dodo” of Remington and Ryerson Rowley, and Zoey and Alyssa Fratesi. Doris will be remembered by her sisters Gayle (Lou) Okmanas and Lois Patrick; her sister-in-law Dina Fratesi; her special friends Theone, Joe, and Amanda (Chico); along with many nieces, nephews.

Doris was as an office manager for the Canadian Cancer Society for many years. She was very dedicated to her work and spent countless hours of her own time helping those in need. In addition, she was a published author, a professional artist and subsequent to retirement, became an antique dealer.

She had numerous hobbies including amassing her extensive collection of nodders, antique jewelry and buttons. Doris was an enthusiast of genealogy and the family historian, writing a book of her British, Welsh and Scottish heritage called “Old Soldiers Never Die.” As an avid reader she would often finish one of her murder mysteries and ghost stories in a day.

Doris had a lifelong devotion to volunteer and community work and being very spiritual, was actively involved within her church. She was a talented singer and a member of her church and community theatre choirs.  Doris also spearheaded many political movements and, being far ahead of her time, was a tireless trailblazer. As a free spirit she definitely marched to the beat of her own drum and always championed the greater good.

Doris was larger than life, always had a positive attitude and, with her wonderful sense of humour, brought much laughter to any room. Although she loved to travel, her favourite place to be was at her cottage on Twin Lakes among nature and her beautiful gardens where she spent many extraordinary times with her loved ones. She enjoyed attending church teas, always on the hunt for new treasures, as well as her Red Hat activities.

Doris was selflessly supportive to family, friends and strangers, touching many lives. The world was a much better place with her in it. She was the most unique, creative, vibrant, fun-loving, and giving woman. Words cannot describe how proud we are of her and how greatly she will be missed.

Those who loved her will take solace in her words to us: “I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.” She will be forever near as she lives within our hearts.

Cremation has taken place. Private burial will occur in Sault Ste. Marie at a later date.
