Douglas “Doug” Randall Banks

August 12, 2022

Suddenly on Friday, August 12, 2022 in Bayfield, Ontario, in his 93rd year.  Beloved husband for 64 years to the late Marie Banks (Menzies).  Loving father to Randall (Monique) and Carolyn (John).  Proud Grampa to Alexander, David, Caelan and Mackenzie.  Dear brother of Darryl (Cathy).  Brother-in-law of Peggy Menzies and Alexander Menzies.  Fondly remembered by his many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Doug was very active in the church and was a member of the choir at Centennial United Church for over 50 years.  He was also very active in the Masonic Lodge.  Doug had a teaching career for over 30 years, and upon retirement, contributed his time to charitable organizations, notably the William Mercer Wilson Centre and the Scottish Rite Learning Center.  He loved travelling, photography and spending time at the cottage.

A masonic service under the auspices of St. John’s Lodge #209A will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at 3:00 p.m., with visitation from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel.  Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Douglas are asked to consider the London Scottish Rite Learning Centre for the free remedial tutoring for children affected with dyslexia.  Alternatively, you may choose to contribute to the William Mercer Wilson Non-Profit Centre, for those needing affordable housing, LHSC – Cancer Program, or a charity of your choice.

We are saddened to learn of Doug’s passing. Our connection goes back a long way, as Doug’s father taught my (Mary Lois’) mother in the 1920s. Doug was a geography colleague of Bruce’s, and I was delighted to to find myself on staff with him too. So many good memories. Our sincere condolences to all the family.

Banks Family: Joyce and I want to express our heart felt thoughts to Randy and Carolyn, Darryl and Cathy, and the rest of the Banks family. They have lost a pillar of the family, a great loss. I personally have lost a dear friend and colleague of many years. Doug and I were associated in the close knit London Geography Teachers Association throughout our careers. We created together several teaching units and techniques which were shared across Ontario. Doug had become an expert in audio visual creations which, along with many of us, - his colleagues with whom he generously shared, - enabled him and us to enrich many class lessons. The highlight of our work was a unit on audiovisual presentations featuring multiple screens. Doug and I were joined in this project by Dave Mennill and Cliff Oliver. We were invited to present this teaching unit at the Ontario Geography Teachers Assoc. (OGTA) annual conference in Toronto in the mid seventies, and at an international Geography conference in Milwaukee, US of A. Doug and I also launched together the Huron/Erie Geography Teachers Association, (HEGTA) which brought together geography teachers from across South Western Ontario in projects and seminars directly related to our area such as the fight to clean up the Great Lakes. Doug and Marie, Joyce and I became close personal friends and spent many happy hours together both in London, and along the beautiful shores of Lake Huron, where we had cottages a few kilometres apart. Randy and Carolyn, I still can visualize you trying to develop into Olympic stars climbing on that contraption of pieced together lumber on the Norman Heights beach, when the cottage there was still the Banks Family Cottage. We had kept in close touch over the years of retirement. The second last time I saw Doug was when I invited him out for lunch. But he insisted on treating me to lunch at the Masonic Lodge, When we arrived, we found the dining room closed. (I think we ended up at Tims.) The last time was when Doug, although failing in health, was able to attend my 90th birthday celebration very early in 2020. He informed me there that he would follow me into our 91st years in just three months. Then covid struck and we had been in touch only by telephone since then. The Banks family have lost a dear member. London education has lost a teaching stalwart, and I have lost one of my dearest friends. Wilf and Joyce Fryday

Doug will be remembered by many of us along the shoreline for his tireless efforts in the Bluewater Shoreline Residents Association from it's initial organization. Our community continues to benefit from his inspiration. I think of you his family as you celebrate a life well lived.

'Mr. banks' , as we called him, was my geography teacher at London Junior High. I remember him fondly as he shared his love of Science and, of course, his creative style of teaching. He would take us to farms in school busses, and point out the moraines as we drove by. (Something I can still do to this day) …although I’m not sure if I still know the difference between drumlins and eskers…….. but then, it HAS been a long time. :-) Much of my teaching style and love of the teaching process I owe to Mr. Banks and the other teachers at London Junior High. Thank You all, and thank you Mr. Banks! -Graham Sparrow
