Dr. Charles Francis Marks

On Monday, February 25th, 2019 Dr. Charles Francis Marks “Frank” passed peacefully with his family at his side.
Beloved wife Helen, daughters Lori and Wendy cherished Frank’s life with a unique celebration.
An afternoon of stories, fond family memories and kisses,
Newfoundland, golf, family and friends filled Frank’s final thoughts.
Beloved husband of 50 years to Helen; loving father to Lori and Wendy (Darren); dearest Papa to Sam, Rhys and Ben. Frank will be greatly missed by his brother Jack, his many friends and extended family.
Waiting to reunite with him are his parents Mildred and John; siblings Mary, Ange, Bun and Llew.
Frank loved his work as a Research Scientist for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Dr. Marks served as Director of Research Stations at Delhi, Harrow and London, Ontario. After retirement he could be found either on a golf course or in a garden. To honour his love of nature, a memorial service will take place at the Civic Gardens, 625 Springbank Drive, London on Sunday, May 26, 2019 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Frank and family would like to acknowledge the exceptional care he received while in the CCU, CSRU and from the entire Cardiac Team at LHSC, University Hospital. Frank’s wish is for any donation to be made to LHSC, University Hospital, Cardiac Research. Westview Funeral Chapel entrusted with arrangements.

Our deepest sympathies to Helen and family. We are going to miss our friend Frank so much. We loved Frank's wit and sense of humour. It was always fun to hear his political opinions and commentary on the world around us. His golf buddies Ron, Al, Gord, Dave and Tom will surely miss him too. It just won't be the same. Much love from John and Sylvia, Tim and Connie.
Frank was a well loved 'old school' Research Director, who always kept an open door and a great sense of humour. He was there for his scientists and technicians and all his support staff. He will not be forgotten.
Frank was my mentor and friend. It was Frank who hired me as a scientist at Harrow and who supported me when I went into management, who gave me total support in my first Director job and who traveled with me in S>E Asia. Frank was a dedicated Canadian civil servant who did an outstanding job in research....he was a people person who had a knack for making friends and endearing himself to everyone. I am honored to have known him and to have spent time with him. He will be very much missed by his family, his countless friends and his colleagues..RIP Frank.
I have many great memories of Frank as a research scientist, manager and a great human being. He was always upbeat and took great pleasure from life and working to make it better for all those he interacted with. He was both supportive and challenging and I owe him a big 'thank-you' for making my time with Agriculture Canada more exciting and enjoyable. My condolences to the family.
I worked with Frank for about a decade and even after we both retired we kept in touch. He was my boss, my mentor and my friend. I have worked with many people in my career but no one taught me more about managing people than Frank. He was a genius in getting the most out of people by simple encouragement and above all, trust. His guidance remains with me every time I have to make a decision about something or someone. He encouraged me to take a 3 week management course in Quebec. I told him I did not want to be a manager. He then said go because it will make you a better father. I went and he was right on many accounts. He arranged for many of us to take a course with Ivy Business School on how to treat your science project as a business. This course led to the an upsurge in the productivity of our organization and has increased the success of all those that were lucky enough to participate. I went to a meeting with Frank in Baltimore, attended by about 300 people. At the reception a small fragile gentleman who I guessed to be in his late eighties asked about who was this fellow I was with. I told him it was Dr. Frank Marks. He told he recognized Frank as he was his professor when taught first year biology at the University of Guelph. Such was Frank, picked out of a crowd 30+ years after by a professor that recognized him. I will miss you Frank, but will carry you with me at some level until I am also out of time.
Frank hired me as a Research Scientist at AAFC in London, Ontario. Even though he retired before my tenure began in September 2000, he would visit to chat about science and celebrate our scientific achievements. He was a great colleague and one of my favorite directors and I will always remember him with the gratitude and admiration.

Helen and family, sincere condolences . I was shocked to hear of Frank's passingly.I looked forward every summer to visit Helen & Ron so I could enjoy Frank's great witt and have political discussions and happy hour. Remembering you in my prayers.
To Helen and family, we were very saddened to learn yesterday of Frank's passing. Frank was a friend of mine since we shared a dormitory room at MacDonald College in 1957-58. We greatly enjoyed a visit with Frank and Helen just over 2 years ago and were in awe with Frank's landscaping of their property. Our thoughts are with you.

We enjoyed his friendly greeting and banter while we did yard chores, his ready wit and political opinions, impromptu happy hour on the patio and excursions to Port Dover summer theatre. The golfing group will be will be missing it's informal leader and best golfer. We are saddened by his passing and hope you find comfort in the knowledge that so many people were touched by his life

Sending all our strength and love to Helen, Wendy, Lori and "Papa Frank's" 3 amazing grandsons. I have fond memories of Dr. Marks usually at one of Sam's or Ben's birthday parties. (Remember the one with the snake and the tarantula?) I could always count on Wendy to ask her dad to identify plants and trees in my "new to me" gardens. He will be missed and remembered fondly.
