Edward S. Scaldwell

October 15, 2016

Peacefully at University Hospital, London, following cardiac concerns, Ed passed away on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at the age of 85.

Born on April 3, 1931, predeceased by his parents Stanley Eric Bud Scaldwell (1955) and Elvina Scaldwell (1996). Father of Ted Scaldwell (Krista Hutchinson), of Toronto. Grandfather of Chloe and Brendan, whom he adored. Brother of Susan Dykes (Gary), of Grand Bend and Doug (Scarlett), of Strathroy. Uncle of London residents Jacki Kostuk (Steve) and Jeff Dykes, Jason Dykes, of St. Thomas, along with Strathroy residents Shayne Scaldwell and Adam Scaldwell. Great-uncle to Kirby and Talley Kostuk, both of London.

Ed was born in London, Ontario and attended South Collegiate Institute, and the University of Western Ontario. Shortly afterwards, he began what would become a successful career with IBM in Toronto and Ottawa, followed as President of EDP Associates in Vancouver, and later as Founding President of Infodata in Toronto, before retiring and moving home to London.

Pleasure in his early years included frequent stays at his grandparents’ cottage in Port Stanley, which he reminisced about while there on the beach recently with his son and grandchildren. Ed was an avid sports fan who played semi-pro football in St. Thomas, Ontario. He especially enjoyed all about this sport. This included leading his team as quarterback, winning the high school city championship, many years as an Argonaut season ticket holder, and enthusiastically discussing the subject or watching telecasts with whomever was willing. In his days as a business owner and young parent, his spirit for community service was stimulated by partaking in numerous civic projects with the Toronto Junior Board of Trade. Delight was also found sailing on Lakes Ontario and Huron. During retirement, he enjoyed volunteering as a ski instructor with the Track 3 program at the London Ski Club and as cook for the Boys’ & Girls’ Club of London after school program. A passionate reader, Ed also enjoyed 20th century world history and biographies of all kind. His favourite subject later in life was his grandchildren, and they will miss him dearly.

Deepest gratitude is expressed to the kind nurses and doctors at University Hospital, and the caregivers at CCAC of London. Their caregiving through tremendous talent and understanding will be forever remembered with fondness and appreciation.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, where the funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. Interment at Woodland Cemetery, London. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boys’ & Girls’ Club of London Foundation.

Very sorry to hear of Ted's demise. My thoughts are with you and your family Ted. All the best in the coming days from (the other) London. I have always had a soft spot for my cousin, and fond memories from when I was studying in Toronto and Ted was living there... He was very kind in letting me leave "a few things" in his basement when I was between residences - he'd give a knowing grin, as my pile of boxes nearly reached the ceiling. Memories of visits in Grand Bend and Bayfield marina, and meeting up for a meal in the area to hear his stories and anecdotes - of which there were many. He lived a full life. One of my earliest memories is a sunny visit in a west Toronto park long ago, with him swinging young Teddy back and forth by his beltloops. I thought that was amazing fun... but never had the pleasure! Requiescat in pace Ted Snr.
