SMITH, Elizabeth  On January 24, 2011, at University Hospital, Elizabeth Smith of London, at the age of 84. Most important of all, a proud and devoted Mum to Jeffery Smith of Vancouver, Kate Reid-Thorpe and her husband John of Manitoba, and the late Mark (2001) and David (1954). Loving grandmother to Jeff Thorpe.  Her happiest times were the wilderness trips shared with her children; lifelong memories of love and learning.  Loving sister to Stephen (Alison) and the late Philip Reid (Ruth).  Proud aunt of Michael, Patricia, Jennifer, Andrew and Suzanne. Daughter of the late Dr. Ernest and Kathleen Reid.  Fondly remembered by her many dear friends. Dedicated teacher for over 30 years, throughout Canada and U.S., 19 years at South Collegiate Institute, London. Avid nature lover, wild animal conservationist and loving pet owner.   Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Elizabeth are asked to consider Canadian Wildlife Federation, World Wildlife Fund or the London Humane Society.  A gathering of friends to celebrate Elizabeth’s life will take place in the summer.

Elizabeth was my home-form, English teacher at South Secondary School when I was in grade 9, in 1969-1970. Elizabeth was a kind and engaging teacher to have at South and I've never forgotten her and that was 41 years ago. Please accept my sincerest sympathies for losing her. She was very, very special.

Mrs. Smith was both a wonderful English teacher to me in my years at South Collegiate (class of '79), and the mother of a good friend to me, Mark. Tragically, the last time I saw her was as I hugged her at Mark's funeral a few years ago. For those of us who sense a spiritual afterlife, may we be comforted knowing they are now in each other's everlasting embrace, as I wish the same peace for her loved ones yet here.

I have wonderful memories of our years together in the English Department at South. I especially treasure the times she referred to me as "that young fellow". My deepest condolences to the family.
