Fiona Jane Gruninger

June 16, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fiona Gruninger at University Hospital, on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. During Fiona’s 55 years with us, she was a wonderful daughter, a caring sister, a loving wife, an amazing mother, and a cherished friend. Raised in the small town of Deep River, Ontario, she moved to London where she enjoyed her career as a paediatric nurse at LHSC. She made the best of every moment, spending her time wandering the beach, exploring new trails, photographing rare birds, or baking her famous Mississippi Mud. Despite her struggles, she always faced life with a smile. Loving wife of Greg, she will be greatly missed by her children, Jason (Bianca), Matt (Elyse), and Robyn (Jacob). Fiona is survived by her father, Brian, and Nancy Townes. Predeceased by her mother, Joy Townes. Sister of Geoffrey, Sharon (Greg), and Sherry (Bobby); and aunt to many nieces. The family wishes to thank Fiona’s many friends, as well as her wonderful healthcare team for their kindness, compassion, and support over the past year. Cremation has taken place. At Fiona’s request, there will not be a funeral service. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to commemorate Fiona’s life are welcome to contact the family about donations toward a park bench in a place she enjoyed.

Catch the trade winds in your sails.

Explore, Dream, Discover.”

Greg, Jason, Matt and Robyn your mom was a very special friend. I sat back and thought about how long we knew each other and it was about 18 years. Throughout that time we made many memories together. She was truly one of a kind my prayers and thoughts go out to each of you. I will also miss her.

My deepest condolences to Fiona's family. Fiona and I were very close friends in High School, and we shared many hours biking and swimming and exploring in Deep River. She was a true friend, and will never be forgotten.

So sorry for the loss to your family. I had the pleasure of getting to know Fiona through the children that she loved so much. Whether she was picking up Jason, Matt or Robyn at the Kindergarten door, cheering them on at school events, or volunteering in many classrooms, her love for her family was evident. She was one classy lady. Know we are thinking of your family at this difficult time. Karen B

I am so sorry to hear the news of Fiona's passing. She was truly a bright light -- kind, warm, wise, and always smiling that wonderful smile of hers. Whenever our paths crossed in the neighbourhood, Fiona would speak of her children with so much pride, and I know that her family was an ever-present source of joy in her life. To the Gruninger family, please accept my sincere condolences. To Fiona: Godspeed, sweet lady! <3

Our deepest sympathies go out to you and your family Greg. Fiona has left this physical world, may her soul be with you and your family forever loving and guiding you until you meet again. Here is a poem I would like to share. I once had a heart both brave and true Now it has gone from me to you Take it as I would have done For now you have two and I have none. When I am in heaven and you're not there I'll paint you face upon the golden stair For all the angels upon to see Exactly what you mean to me. JOE & SANDRA

My deepest condolences to the Gruninger family. I had the pleasure of teaching Fiona's children and during those years and even for several years after, Fiona tirelessly offered her support, by volunteering in my classroom. We shared lots of laughs and her smile brightened everyone's day. More recently, I've enjoyed taking power hikes with her and the dogs and catching up. Fiona was a selfless, charitable, kind and beautiful person and she will be greatly missed by all whose lives she's touched. Natalie Brown

My deepest sympathy to Greg, Jason, Matt, Robyn and the family. Fiona was one very special woman, and although her life was a busy one, caring for her family, dogs, and working in a profession that could be very demanding, she always gave freely of her time to volunteer in my classroom, through the years that her children attended elementary school and even after they had finished their year in Grade 4. Fiona was always such a positive, level-headed, intelligent person and I so valued her support, as did my sister after I finished my time at EC. I will cherish the many wonderful memories that I have of her, and I am keeping the Gruninger family in my thoughts and prayers during such a difficult time of grief. She will be missed.❤️
