Geoffrey ‘Geoff’ Robert Carter

July 28, 1946 – September 24, 2020

Geoffrey Robert Carter, 74, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Hospice, London, Ontario.

Geoff and Judi repatriated to Canada on August 26, 2020 from the USA. He was made as comfortable as possible at home for the next three weeks with the loving care of his family and the support of the VON and PSW’s in home service. Geoff was transferred to St. Joseph’s Hospice on the 17th of September, where he was in the wonderful and compassionate 24 hour care of their doctors, nurses and staff. His family spent many, many hours with him daily at the hospice. To Geoff’s comfort, he even got to see his cat, DaisyMae, and had a visit from the new kitten, Vader, who curled up on his chest and went to sleep. His wife, Judi, who overnighted regularly, was there when he slipped away early Thursday morning.

Geoff is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Judianne (née Moran); their two daughters Stephanie (Dan Martens) and Erin (John Bryant); and grandchildren Braiden and Jessica Martens. Also by his brother Howard (Wendy); nephew David Carter (Angela); niece Trisha Carter (Greg Condie); their families; and by Judi’s sister, Joanne Moran, who was always close to him.

Geoff was born in Pointe-à-Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago, on July 28, 1946. He was the youngest of the two sons (Howard and Geoffrey), born from Ralph (1999) and June (2019) Carter.

Geoff’s education started in 1950 at Ida Daunts Primary School (Port of Spain), then in 1955 on to St. Peter’s School (Pointe-à-Pierre). In 1959, he attended The Lodge School (Barbados), where he completed his O Levels. In 1962 to 1964, he was a border at Pierrepont School (Frensham, Surrey, UK), and achieved his A Levels. In 1964, Geoff came to Canada and attended the University of Toronto, where he successfully upgraded his pre-university credits. From 1965 to 1971, he studied at Saint Mary’s University (Halifax, Nova Scotia), where he graduated with both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education Degree. Upon graduation in 1971, Geoff’s first job was a teaching position at Rothesay Netherwood private school for girls in Rothesay, New Brunswick. In that same year, Geoff met Judianne in Saint John, New Brunswick, and they were married in 1973. In 1972, he joined Texaco Canada Ltd. in Moncton, New Brunswick, where he was a sales representative for five years.

At the beginning of 1978, Geoff was offered and accepted a job with Casco Inc. as Area Manager for the Maritime Provinces (1978-1994), based out of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This was the beginning of a very successful and fulfilling 36-year career for Geoff. In 1994, he accepted a job transfer to Jacksonville, Florida by the USA parent company, Corn Products (1994-2003), as Regional Sales Manager for Southeast USA. Then it was on to Chicago, Illinois (2003-2007) as Midwest Regional Sales Manager. Finally, he moved to High Point, North Carolina (2007- 2020) and was responsible for the Southeast Region once again. Geoffrey was always notable for his hard work, honesty and integrity. He retired in April, 2014.

Geoff had a variety of pastimes, hobbies and interests that he enjoyed in his spare time over the years. The main ones were tennis, fly fishing, gardening, wine, card games, darts, collecting and watching movies, and cooking, to name a few. His venture into homemade winemaking (in our basement) with his two cronies, Cliff and Ken, in the late 80’s to early 90’s, was quite the enterprise and adventure. “TLC” was their own design label, which stood for “tender loving care”, as well as “Taylor, Littlepage, Carter”. After a few early mishaps, which got blended into what they called “sludge”, they turned out some very palatable red and white wines, which were shared and enjoyed by all our friends.

Cremation has already taken place. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Geoff may consider the Canadian Cancer Society or St. Jospeh’s Hospice.

 
Geoff will be dearly missed by all his family, his many friends and acquaintances – wherever we are we should all raise a glass of his favorite Jameson Irish Whiskey (or a libation of your liking) and share a memory in a toast to a wonderful, loving and kind husband, Dad, Grandad, brother, uncle and good friend!
