Giuseppina Sartoretto (née Romeo)
October 5, 1938 - November 6, 2025
With deep love and sadness, we share the passing of Giuseppina “Josephine” Sartoretto (née Romeo), who passed peacefully on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
Devoted wife to Tranquillo “Trinco” Sartoretto for 64 years, mother to Beatrice “Bea” (Dan) Jones and Patricia (Curtis) McGee, proud Nonna to Rebecca (Michael), Samantha (Alexander), and Miranda, and Bisnonna to soon-to-be first great grandchild, Ivy Rome.
Beloved daughter of her late parents, Vincenzo and Girolama Romeo, her siblings: the late Giuseppe Romeo (the late Enza), the late Giovanni Romeo (the late Caterina), Teresa Reale (the late Salvatore), Angelina Condarcuri (the late Michele), the late Tonino Romeo (Lena), and Ida Sanci (the late Mimmo). She will also be deeply missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Those who were closest to Giuseppina had the privilege of experiencing the traditions and culinary talents that define her legacy. Giuseppina can be described as the core of her family. Her glowing presence and elaborate meals brought people together on many Sunday afternoons and for special occasions. She always insisted on being the last person to eat when she hosted, at which time she would chew every bite 36 times so she could maintain her exceptionally small figure. Giuseppina welcomed many people into her kempt home, encouraging each new face to bring twenty-five cents so she could take it in a competitive game of Tombola, Briscola, or Nocciole. Her infectious screams when she won big will ring in the ears of her family for years to come.
But Giuseppina’s greatest joy in life were her three granddaughters. Giuseppina spent as much time as she could teaching her granddaughters to embrace her Italian heritage through her cooking, mannerisms, and gigantic flash cards branded with Italian words uncommonly used in everyday conversation. With the Italian news on in the background, she would share special meals with them, and remind them that the most important things in life were education, independence, and having a Nonna. Giuseppina constantly showered her granddaughters with love and affection, celebrating their individual accomplishments and humbling and teaching them when required.
Giuseppina wasn’t just a Nonna to her granddaughters though; she was a Nonna to everyone who was graciously welcomed into her family. Friends of all kinds, young and old, were given a Nonna; someone that not a soul should have to live without.
Though in her final years Giuseppina’s battle with dementia resulted in lost words and faded memories, her legacy as a loving wife, mother, and Nonna will persist long after her passing.
