Hans Juergen Ph.D., C.Psych. Breiter

January 21, 2019

Peacefully with loving family by his side, on Monday, January 21, 2019, at the age of 71. Predeceased by his father Hans Max. Survived by his mother Lucie, his loving and devoted wife Mavis (née Munn), brothers: Barry (Pauline), Randy (Judy), Clive (Susan), and the Munn family. Also missed by many nieces and nephews, friends and colleagues. Hans was an intelligent, compassionate man who was passionate about his profession as a clinical psychologist. He was active in tennis, judo, and other sports. The family would like to thank Dr. Vincent, Dr. Andrews, Dr. Khan, the oncology nurses and the VON for their care and compassion. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Hans are asked to consider Humane Society London & Middlesex, Canadian Wildlife Federation or the London Regional Cancer Program.

My condolences to Mavis and Hans' family. I Knew Hans as a student in my graduate course in clinical science, and as a friend and colleague. Hans was gentle, respectful and respected, courageous and intelligent. The project he undertook in my course has always stood out as one that took both courage and aptitude. Technically, it involved the estimate of "epsilon" for adjusting degrees of freedom in analysis-of-variance designs involving repeated measurements (a mainstay of much clinical science). Developing the computational algorithm was difficult but vital to valid data analyses. His procedure was especially important because at the time, such was unavailable in standard statistical packages. Needless to say, Hans' methodology was used extensively by students and faculty. Hans will very much be missed in his field of psychology, and beyond.

We were very saddened to hear of Hans' passing and our condolences go out to Mavis and the family. Hans and I lost contact and hadn't seen each other for many years, but I have fond memories of the time when he was on contract with Corrections Canada. He did excellent work assisting and counselling men and women who were reintegrating back into the community after a time spent in prison, and he was highly respected and very well thought of by all of us at the parole office. We developed a friendship and enjoyed many lunches together (Hans always insisted in picking up the tab!) He was a great role model and confidante to me and I will always be grateful for the advice, mentoring and support he provided to me as a young man with a new career and young family. He was a pretty good tennis player too and I remember some intense doubles matches. Hans was a wonderful man and I know he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Dr. Breiter made a difference in many people's lives, and because of his compassion and dedication as a psychologist, several men on parole were able to change their thinking and behaviors and so turned away from a criminal lifestyle. In this way he contributed to the safety of our community and this will be part of his legacy. All of us at the parole office are saddened by this news. We remember Hans fondly and our hearts go out to Mavis and all the family at this difficult time. Rest in peace Hans.

Keith and I were shocked and very saddened to hear about Hans' death. Our love and condolences to Mavis and all of the family. We have many fond memories of our times in London with Hans and Mavis--both interesting, warm and lively people. We played fierce weekly Dungeons and Dragons games, I took self-defense with Hans, Keith learned some German and we were introduced to their fabulous cooking. They contributed a cat to our household and once made a Babar cake for our son's second birthday. There were many (sometimes complicated) costume parties. Hans was one of my classmates in graduate school and he brought balance to the process, reminding us that there was much of life beyond school. We kept in occasional touch over the years and over the distance, but wish it had been more often. Thank you, Hans, for all of your contributions in your work and in your life. Rest in peace and keep that twinkle in your eye, Hans.

My deepest sympathy to Mavis and family at this sad time of Han's passing. I worked with Hans many, many years ago on the Adolescent Program at what was known as LPH at the time. Ever the professional, with a sense of humour, he was a good colleague to work alongside.

I am so sorry to hear of Hans' passing. Hans was my supervisor many years ago on the Adolescent unit at LPH when I was a psychology student there. I remember him as a very kind, compassionate, dedicated man who cared deeply about his clients and others. His enthusiasm for psychology was contagious, and he was a very positive influence on me at the beginning of my career.

I only just heard about the passing of Hans. I was very saddened to hear this. I knew Hans as a colleague for many years and especially so when he had his office across from mine at 450 Central. Hans was a very special man. Kind, thoughtful, very respectful of his patients, and always trying to do the best for them and be fair. I never heard any of our mutual clients complain about his assessments.I enjoyed our brief conversations together about psychology and life. For all who knew and loved him, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Hans was my judo instructor and mentor when I attended Mount A from 1973 - 77, when he started the Mount Allison Judo Club in 1973. He was a dedicated teacher and indeed put together a very competitive program, with several of us winning provincial tournaments. I was on the executive of the club for a couple of years and further appreciated his organizational skills. I always hoped our paths would cross so that I could once again thank him for introducing me to such a wonderful sport. I did not pursue my judo career but still remember all my throws and holds...Hans many thanks for all you did for us at Mount A. I was saddened to hear of your passing.

Hans saved my life. I have had two mentors in all of my life, the most exceptional of men. Hans was one of them. I loved him with all of my heart. He gave me everything. And his wisdom rings in my ears to this day. I am his son, to the extent that I could ever be. Love, C
