Herbert Hogarth (Garth) James

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Herbert Hogarth James, affectionately known as “Garth,” peacefully in the comfort of his home on June 16, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born on November 20, 1937 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Garth lived a life defined by service, leadership, faith, and devotion to family. He was a loving husband, proud father and grandfather, dedicated community volunteer, and respected public servant.

Garth shared 66 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Marilyn Lucy Jessie James (née McLeod). Together they built a life centered on family, friendship, faith, and caring for others.

He was the cherished father of Lynn Louise James (Tom Agnew), Richard Herbert Garth James, and David Malcolm James (Jennifer Cougler James). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Courtney Jackman (Kyle Jackman) and Abbey James, whose lives brought him immense joy and pride.

Garth proudly served his country as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy before embarking on a distinguished career in municipal government. He devoted 25 years to the City of Cambridge, serving as Commissioner of Engineering and Public Works. In retirement he returned to university to study Psychology at Wilfred Laurier University. Through his leadership, integrity, and commitment to public service, he helped shape the community he was proud to call home.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Garth enjoyed a life rich in friendship and community involvement. He was an avid reader, loved singing with his male choirs, enjoyed spirited games of cribbage with friends, and rarely missed the opportunity to watch and discuss sports (GO HABS GO!). His warm personality, thoughtful perspective, and genuine interest in others made him a valued friend and mentor to many.

A man of deep faith and compassion, Garth volunteered with Out of the Cold and Apple Core through Wesley United Church, and generously contributed his time and talents to several community service boards, including Treasurer of the Vasculitis Foundation of Canada. He believed strongly in serving others and quietly worked throughout his life to make his community a better place.

Garth will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, gentle humour, unwavering integrity, and steadfast devotion to family. His legacy lives on through the countless people whose lives were enriched by his friendship, leadership, and example.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers, healthcare professionals, friends, and loved ones who supported Garth and his family throughout his final years.

A Celebration of Life and Funeral Service will be held at Wesley United Church, 6 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, Ontario, on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Vasculitis Foundation Canada in Garth’s memory.

Though deeply missed, Garth’s life remains an enduring example of service, faith, generosity, and love. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
