Janet Lillian Heerema

October 29, 2016

Gone too soon, Janet passed on to heavenly glory on Saturday, October 29, 2016.  Born second child of Robert and Lillian Shaver in St. Catharines on February 18, 1950, Janet is survived by husband Dr. Jelte (Jerry) Heerema, children (and grandchildren) Erin and Steven Newburn (Kristen, Jeffrey, Alyssa), Sarah and David Johnstone, Adam and Andrea Fischer (Zavier, Weyland), and step-children (and step-grandchildren) Angela Heerema and Omar Djibo (Pamella), Dr. Timothy and Jennifer Heerema (Ben, Kate), and Darryl and Jenny Heerema.  She is also survived by sister Kathleen (Robert) Leadley and brother Keith (Anne) Shaver, as well as several nieces and nephews.  Janet was a loving, devoted wife and mother who cherished her family times.  Her career was mainly as a church organist and music director, most recently at Oakridge Presbyterian Church in London and Trivett Memorial Anglican Church in Exeter.  She led church choirs and community choirs, and her energetic, enthusiastic style led her to organize two choir tours to England and Scotland in 2003 and 2006, singing in the great cathedrals, including a week as choir-in-residence at York Minster. Most recently Janet held the Celebration of Life Concert at Centennial Hall on November 15, 2015 to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer research locally. Visitation will be held at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Tuesday, November 1 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., and on Wednesday, November 2 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.  The service will be conducted at OAKRIDGE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 970 Oxford Street West, London, on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., followed by interment in Oakland Cemetery and a reception at the church. Donations now can be made to the London Health Sciences Foundation (LHSF) Women’s Health Care Campaign, or Ovarian Cancer, or a charity of your choice.

I have only just found out about Janet's passing and feel deeply saddened. Janet was such a beautiful person, inside and out. I met Janet while my mom was in Vic Hospital and I was drawn to her by her beautiful smile, optimistic attitude and vibrant personality. She was such a talent. I will never forget her. I will always be touched by Jerry's constant support to his beloved Janet. Words cannot express how I feel learning of Janet's death. I'm sure she was an inspiration to others (including myself). A life that will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathy on behalf of myself and my family. A special hug to you Jerry.

~ Laurie Johnston

Dear Jerry and family, Janet was a most lovely person and always showed respect and positive regard for those with whom she interacted. I have been so privileged to have been a part of bell choir at Exeter under Janet's leadership. She always made me feel like a very important person and that was a true gift to receive and a way to show her genuine love for every individual she ever met. Heaven is a little brighter with her passing and earth with the gifts she gave and inspired in each of us.

~ Dianna Hardy

It was an honour to care for Janet during her illness. She always carried herself with such grace and showed so much kindness to everyone who crossed her path . My thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.

Jerry and Family: It was my great privilege to know Janet and 'inherit' the vibrant music program that she built at Oakridge. I so appreciate her support in tough times and even more so, the tremendous effort that she made to be at my husband's funeral last October. It meant so much to me. May you be uplifted by the support of family and community. Peace to you all!

I met Janet when I joined the South Huron Community Choir and the Bell Ringing Group. It was such a pleasure to have her as our leader! Her incredible musical talent and her love of God was apparent in all that she did! She was a beautiful person, both inside and out! What a privilege to have known her! Jerry and Family, you will miss her dearly, but I am sure she will be guiding each of you, in her loving way, from heaven. My sincere sympathy to each of you, at this time.

~ Carol LeBeau

Alex - The last I saw Janet was the concert she put on for donating to ovarian cancer. It was a beautiful concert that was put on that day. I knew Janet from the church in Exeter. She was organist, and it was amazing to watch her move her feet so quickly. I was really sad when I learned she had died. But I will always remember her as the enduring, happy person she was. I really loved Janet. Carrie - Alex echoes my sentiments too - singing in Janet's choirs was a privilege I treasure, but mostly just getting to know Janet was the biggest privilege of all. Our thoughts are with all of the family, and our hope is that you will have as many smiles as you do tears, remembering Janet and her legacy of joy and hope.

~ Alex & Carrie Rawson

We are so saddened by the news of Janet's passing and send warmest condolences to you Jerry and the family. She was a very special lady who could light up a room by her very presence. It was an honour to have been able to participate in the Celebration of Life concert, almost a year ago now. How she had hoped to do another for a special cause. We shall all miss her.

My sincere and deepest sympathy to Jerry, Erin, Sarah and family. You are so precious to me being part of Janet's legacy. Through you, I will always remember how talented and dedicated to music the way Janet was with all of us. I have learned a lot from her music skills and unlimited knowledges. Her smile and incomparable humanity touching every heart! She has touched my heart and my soul. Her approach and encouraging words with her sense of humor always kept me positive, as her choir member, and respectful toward all kind of music and choristers. She has taught me a lesson of life through the path of singing collectively with her and her family members. It is well with my soul... Au Revoir, Janet!

~ Claudette Leger
