Lisa and family, my sincerest condolences on the loss of John. We had every good intention of being there yesterday for the celebration of life for John, Tom Villeneuve, Frank Dottor, Dave Lester and myself ( Al Watling) but as we started out from Mississauga we hit a brick wall of traffic. A huge accident on the 401 made traffic crawl and took us 1 hour just to get from Trafalgar Rd Exit to Hwy 25 which normally takes 5 minutes and the traffic and accident was still miles ahead. So unfortunately we got off and went back and decided to go to a local pub and raise a glass in Johns honour. It seemed fitting, we knew John from work and playing hockey and the great weekends at the cottage with the hockey team. So we shared memories, laughed and raised a glass or two. We had our own celebration, and somehow we knew John was with us too. John, you will be forever missed!

~ Alan Watling

Donna & I send our "heart felt" condolences to the Rendl family. John was a unique individual & friend. My association with John was primarily through Bell hockey - for many years - where he was our Team Manager. A quote I feel that summarized John's involvement is as follows: "Work for a cause, not applause. Live to express, not to impress. Don't strive to make your presence noticed, just make your absence felt."....... And you did John! We will miss you! Sending Much Love, Donna & Dave Byers

Dear Ann, Lisa and Rob, Sean, Kyle, Heather and Katie. As cousins to your family, we are so heavy-hearted here in the U.S. We loved John dearly and we extend our deepest condolences to all of you on behalf of his passing. Our mom Marie, John's 2nd cousin, is now reminiscing about their very early days together as neighbors in Yugoslavia. (They lived directly across the street from one another.) "Oh... he was a naughty boy," our mom remembers. "And people taught him how to be even MORE naughty!" Marie remembers, "He would take off his shoes and throw them into the well. His mother then tied his shoes so tightly that he couldn't take them off again. So he took his NEIGHBOR'S shoes and threw THEM into the well! Of course, his mother spanked him." Needless to say, John went from a naughty little boy to the most honorable and respectful person one could know. And "colorful" too! Claudia remembers John grilling in the rain at the cottage in 1979 with a VERY fancy woman's umbrella - how fun! We will miss him dearly and, yes, he will always be in our hearts. Love and our deepest sympathy from Marie, Claudia (John's God Daughter) and Fred Wintergerst

Barry and I would not own our treasured property at lake Eugenia if Barry had not attended one of those famed hockey weekends for john,s over the hill gang hockey team in 1979. He told John to let us know if anything came for sale and long story short, about five week later we were neighbors two doors down. So many great early memories like stringing an extension cable through the trees so we could play bridge and still hear the baby monitor. Knowing Sean and Lisa as teenagers then watching Kyle and Heather grow up ... The list does not end there. John was a real gentleman and having him in our lives has been both a privilege and a pleasure. To Ann, Lisa, Sean, Kyle, Heather - deepest condolences on your loss. We truly do share your grief and hope that like us you will all remember the good times. John was truly a great man and his was a life well lived. Nancy, Barry, Greg & Jeff Matthews

I had the pleasure of meeting John through hockey with the Bell Bruins. I too remember the hockey team cottage weekends on Lake Eugenia and the good times that were had by all. I was great to reconnect with John in recent years at the Eagle Beaver alumni golf days. Please accept my sincere condolences. Richard (Sak)

My memories of John come from my days playing hockey with the then Bell Bruins hockey team. I joined the team in the early eighties, playing Thursday nights at Doublerink Arenas up in Vaughan. I can't remember if John was playing or coaching at that time but I recall his expression when things didn't go well on the ice. "Hard Lines" he would say. "Hard Lines McKay". I'm not sure why but this has stuck with me all these years and I often repeat it to my kids when they're complaining about this or that. Like Barry, I too recall the weekends with the hockey team at Barry's cottage. With John's cottage just a couple of doors down, when we ran out of booze at Barry's we would go to John's and clean out his stash. While I will likely be unknown to most who read this, I want to express my heartfelt condolences to John's family at this time. I'm glad I had the opportunity to know John and I'm thankful my old hockey pals kept me informed about how John's been doing. He will be missed. Cheers John. It was great to know you. Hard Lines. Ann, Lisa and Sean: my deepest sympathy for your loss, John was truly a great guy. I have many great memories ranging from our days playing hockey together, especially the team weekends at the cottage, socializing at Lake Eugenia and most recently working with John (and Skipper) to build Rob and Lisa's log home. Stay strong, remember the good times . See you on the 5th to celebrate his life...Barry
