Lawrence Fric

Died peacefully at home on Friday, September 20, 2019, aged 83, with his family at his side.
Lawrence is survived by his beloved wife Ruth of 60 years, with whom he built a wonderful and happy life. He is also survived by his daughters Laura (Casey Mahood) and Kathryn; grandchildren Hope, Desmond and Brooke; siblings Mike (Marsha), Bill (Janice) and Yvonne (John); and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters. Lawrence was very proud of his family.
Lawrence was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, where his father worked as a miner and his mother raised their large family after they had immigrated from Croatia. Lawrence was proud of his heritage and spoke fondly of his childhood in the northern community.
After high school, Lawrence worked 10 years for the Bank of Commerce. His career there included traveling throughout southern Manitoba, auditing bank branches, and eventually took a position as an accountant at a branch.
Lawrence left banking to study economics. He received his Masters at the University of Manitoba, and his PhD at the University of Toronto. Lawrence then embarked on his second career as a professor teaching at King’s College in London, Ontario.
Outside of work, Lawrence pursued many interests and was a skilled handyman, who even built the family’s Muskoka cottage in his spare time.
Lawrence enjoyed his retirement immensely. He was an active member of the Thames Valley Central Model Railroad Club and the Ilderton Curling Club. Lawrence and Ruth travelled all over the world and drove across North America. When home, they attended many plays and concerts. Lawrence and Ruth particularly enjoyed hiking in Algonquin Park several times a year, and he loved the fall colours.
He will be greatly missed.
The family is respecting Lawrence’s wishes and will not be holding a service. If desired, donations to the Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario in Lawrence’s memory would be appreciated by family.

I had the privilege of having Prof Fric for several classes while at Kings. I have many fond memories of his classes, but besides being a great teacher he was a super guy. He will be missed, and definitely remembered. My thoughts are with the entire Fric family.

Uncle lawrence and I would email back and forth from time to time to see how one another were doing. He came to a tournament I had in london a few years back and had not seen him since so was saddened to hear of this news when it happened.
Professor Fric was one of the best teachers and mentors I've ever had. It's been over 30 years since I graduated from King's but I haven't forgotten his kindness. My deepest sympathy to the family.
I have fond memories of those evenings spent curling with a fellow Manitoban at the London Curling Club. Growing up in Brandon, I went fishing north of Flin Flon on several occasions and came to love that part of Canada. When Lawrence and I both found ourselves teaching at UWO it was an opportunity to reminisce about growing up in God's country.
I have fond memories of Lawrence & enjoyed his company & visits to our home. He was a special, good natured, caring person, & helped produce a caring & neighbourly Family. I will miss him & wish him happy trails & that we meet again one day. Dear Ruth, may your many friends, relatives & the Great One help you & your Family through this difficult time. I offer my deepest sympathy to you.
From humble immigrant beginnings in Flin Flon to a PhD and professor of economics; and a close-knit family life. A Canadian story of accomplishment and a life well lived. Heartfelt sympathies and condolences to all the Frics and Mahoods.
I was very sad to get this news yesterday. Although I'm glad he's no longer in pain, Lawrence and his big smile will be greatly missed at family gatherings. Please accept my deepest condolences.
