“When I come to the end of the road and the sun is set for me,

I want no rights in a gloom filled room.  Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little but not too long and not with your head bowed low.

Remember the laughter and joy we shared and lovingly let me go.”

I have just heard that my dearest friend, Lena, has left us to move on to the fullness of our God's loving care - and she managed to do it as we always talked about - in her sleep. I laugh through my tears, remembering how many times we talked together about how we hoped to go "in our sleep" - and she has done that! But I have missed her so much the past year or so, and I will grieve her loss still, for Lena was a true gift to me in so many ways. We hit it off from the first time we met at All Saints', London, and over the following years, we shared our stories in ways that we could do with no other person, finding comfort and strength in each other's listening to our concerns and our joys. I feel so richly blessed just to have known her. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your loss, and I pray you will know light and love and strength and comfort in the days ahead. With love to you all as you gather to celebrate the life of Lena, a true Christian lady, and my dearest friend, Jean Koning.

Her very presence dignified the all-too-too few occasions we shared. Lena could not but be loved by all who spent even a few moments with her. Christian and dedicated to her roots, Lena made even the coarsest of us become civilized. Bask in the springtime of your God's eternal love, Lena.
