Marilyn Claire Smith
December 16, 2016
December 6, 1929 – December 16, 2016
After a life well-lived, surrounded by love, our sweet Mum, Marilyn Claire (Speck) Smith, formerly of London, has left this world. Marilyn was born in Toronto and attended Frankland Public School, Loretto Abbey and the University of Toronto (Dental Nursing – Class of 1949). In 1951, she married “the boy next door”, John Malcolm (Mack) Smith (2007) and they shared 56 loving years together. Mack’s military career took them to Germany, Shearwater, Cornwallis, Goose Bay, Camp Borden, Petawawa and finally London, where they lived for many years. Marilyn was very involved in her community, the hospital auxiliary, the IODE and the ACW at the Church of the Transfiguration. She was a valued member of Glasfax and ran a successful antique business for 25 years. Her vast knowledge of glass and china, honesty, and friendly personality were appreciated by all who knew her. Marilyn tirelessly researched the family histories of both she and Mack, and this is a gift that we will treasure for generations. Marilyn is loved deeply by her children, Katherine Culbert (Peter), David Smith (Joanne), and Christopher Smith, and will be missed by her grandchildren, Jay (Melissa), Julie (Rob), Ian (Kim), Katie and Lindsay, and her great-grandchildren, Sarah, Henry, Luke, Oliver, Everett and Ben, as well as her brother Dr. John E. Speck (Yvonne). A funeral service, officiated by the Reverend Anne Jaikaran, will be conducted at WESTVIEW FUNERAL CHAPEL, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 1:00 p.m., with visitation one hour prior. Donations in Marilyn’s memory may be made to the Men’s Mission, the Humane Society or the charity of your choice. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the kind staff at Nightingale Nursing and Landmark Assisted Living, Dr. Michael Bayer, a truly amazing physician, and the fantastic nursing staff at Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg, for facilitating Mum’s peaceful journey onward.

Our thoughts are with your entire family Smitty. I have such great memories of growing up around your Mom and Dad in Sherwood Forest and Orchard Park. Your family always welcomed me, and it was your Mom that was always watching us out of the corner of her eye. She knew what she was dealing with! Your Mom was always smiling, and loved to laugh. Kathy, Christopher (Crump) and your entire family has been of great support to your mother, and you know she appreciated it. I am glad you were all able to be with her. Although we will not be able to attend the service, we will be there in spirit and we will be thinking of all of you. I have very fond memories of your fathers funeral being together with all the Smiths. Mike, Rosy, Ben and Mark McLean
With our deepest sympathy in the passing of Marilyn and her family. We'll always have fond memories from our time at The Church of the transfiguration where she was a well loved member of the congregation.
Kathy, Chris and the entire Smith family, our deepest sympathy on the passing of your mother, Marilyn. Although I only met her a few times I remember her as a very loving, kind soul. Our thoughts are with you, Peter, Jay, Julie and Ian and their families at this time. Love, Steve, Kay & Lee Revington
Deepest sympathy to the Smith family in the loss of Marilyn Speck Smith. I knew her as a childhood friend, living basically next door to one another at our summer cottages on Cawaja Beach. We were very close during those many summers which extended somewhat when we returned to Toronto for our schooling. Our families became further intermingled when the Speck family cousins came to visit them at the Beach creating a romance development between one of the cousins and my sister, Aileen. They were later married after World War II. Marilyn and I kept in touch over the years when they were in London through Christmas cards. We moved to the USA in 1960 and still managed to keep the card thread going up until a few years ago when Kathy informed me of Marilyn's health issues. I am very sad but thankful for receiving this news - it has brought back many wonderful memories of a long and strong friendship. Warmest regards, Margaret (Peg) Faulkner
Condolences from Peggy Forrest. Peggy, and her husband Bob (1925-2013), knew Marilyn and Mack from Shearwater, NS. Marni Hastings (daughter)
