Mark Newsom
June 28, 2025
Mark Allan Newsom, 69 years of age, of Arkona, Ontario, lost his battle with cancer on June 28, 2025, in London, Ontario, with his family at his side. Mark was born on December 10, 1955, to Jim and Shirley Newsom in East York Township, Ontario.
Mark was a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces, serving in both the Navy and the Army. His military career included deployment as a peacekeeper to Cyprus. Mark was later employed by General Motors and General Dynamics Land Systems Canada for his expertise with military vehicles and their operation. During this phase of his career, he was stationed in Saudi Arabia for several years.
Mark will be remembered as a man of intelligence and creativity who possessed a deliciously wicked sense of humour. His large personality was exceeded only by his love for his family and his remarkable generosity. Mark enjoyed renovating, cooking, boating, playing and singing music, and designing and building everything from furniture to electric guitars to mobile festival stages.
He is survived by his beloved wife Cheryl Newsom (née Leggate); children Michael Newsom (Kim) and Heather Newsom (Brian); stepchildren Andrea Wernham (John) and Jim Wernham (Jessie); grandchildren, Charlie, Preston, Harrison, Eve, Cora, Sydney, Henry, Evelyn, Damon and Emilie, as well as siblings Peter Newsom (Jackie), Nancy Newsom-Pravetz (Jim), Jamie Newsom (Renee), Kathryn Newsom (Ward), Andrea Newsom, Donna Newsom (Mark) and Amy Newsom (Curt).
He was preceded in death by his father Peter James Newsom, mother Shirley Newsom (née Thomson) and stepmother June Newsom (née Thomson).
A Celebration of Life will be held at Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 10, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Friday, July 11, 2025, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Kidney Foundation. The family wishes to thank Dr. Berry and the palliative team at University Hospital in London for their compassionate care of Mark in his final days.

Our sincere condolences to the family such a sad time indeed we enjoyed listening to him playing and singing at the jams in Lucan.
My deepest condolences to Cheryl and the family. I met Mark in the military at the then CFB London. Worked with him at DDGM and GD. Great guy gone way too early. RIP Mark. You will be missed and fondly remembered.
I worked with Mark and was sorry to hear of his passing. My thoughts go out to his family.
We didn't know Mark personally, but I'monly through his music and singing at Vintage Green retirement community in ilderton. We enjoyed his skills and his friendly personality. May he rest in peace finally. Our condolences to the entire family.
While I worked at GDLS/GMD as well I really got to know Mark through a shared love of music. I attended and played at several "Newsomfest" events at Mark and Cheryl's lovely country property. When they decided that Newsomfest was too much work, I tried to fill the vacuum with a similar event we called the Millcreek Musicfest at our country place in Port Stanley where Mark came out and jammed along. We also formed a one-time 6 pc band that played at the opening of the Yacht Club in Port (gig initiated by Mark). I also enjoyed playing with Mark and his family at the church in Ailsa Craig to celebrate Mark's 60th. Mark was a smart and talented guy with a great sense of humour and will be sorely missed by all that knew him. His guitar building skills were first rate. The attached pic shows Mark playing his one-off build Newsom Ukelele or "Nuke". My sincere condolences to Cheryl and the Newsom family on your loss.
My condolence to Marks family and friends. I met Mark in the Military, but only got to know him when we worked together at General Dynamics. A great person with a wonderful sense of humour and a pleasure to work with. You will be missed Mark. RIP. Arte et Marte. Fair winds and calm seas, my friend.
