Mary Van Horik

December 9, 2025

Mary (Petronella/Riet) Van Horik (née Van Bussel) passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the age of 98. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry (2011). Mary was a devoted and loving mother to Remi Van Horik (Rhoda), JoAnne Teske (Steve), Peter Van Horik (Janice) & Harry Van Horik. She was a cherished Oma to 11 grandchildren & 15 great-grandchildren; Karl (Brittany), Rowen & Elloise; Antoinette (Travis), Hannah & Harrison; Michael (Kristi), Asher & Cohen; Mathew (Jacqui), Soraia, Zachary & Vance; Christopher (Valerie), Winston & Austin; Justin (Carolyn) & Jax; Jake; Olivia; Rebecca; Rachel & Claire; and Kevin (Marta), Hudson & Rose. We will all miss her warmth and love.

Mary will be fondly remembered by many friends and a large extended family in the Netherlands, where she was born. She immigrated to Canada in 1952 to join her fiancé, and they married on October 4th. Initially a homemaker, she embarked on a new career in 1969 when she and Harry founded Van Horik’s Greenhouses and Garden Centre in Hyde Park. This became a central part of her life, and even after retirement, she was frequently seen at the greenhouse. Mary and Harry were both very active in the community, enjoying extensive travel and a vibrant social life.  The family extends a warm thanks to the staff at Fox Hollow Retirement Home for providing Mary with excellent care.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 709 Wonderland Road North, London. Words of remembrance will be shared at 11:30 a.m., followed by a luncheon reception. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mary can be made to the Alzheimer Society or a charity of your choice.

Sorry for your loss. Mary left us with many lovely memories.

Dad and I have many fond memories of your mom, living and working together in Hyde Park. Playing cards was a common, sometimes noisy pastime in those days. Your mom’s love of plants and gardening will always be remembered. We are sorry to miss her tribute today, but the weather is keeping us home. Toby and Monica

Dear Van Horik - van Bussel family in faraway Canada, Our sincere condolences on the passing of your mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. We fondly remember our trip years ago, when Harry and Mary (known to us as Riet) were our hosts. And, of course, the times they visited us in Brabant. They both led rich lives and achieved a great deal on the other side of the ocean. That is something to be proud of and to cherish the memories for as long as possible. Warm regards from Brabant, Marinus van Horik and Dora van Bommel - van Horik (with help from René and a translation service)
