Master Corporal Nevin Peter

September 5, 1981 - June 2, 2024

Born on September 5, 1981, in London, Ontario, Nevin embodied the spirit of dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence. Raised in a community that valued education and entrepreneurship, he attended White Oaks Public School, Arthur Ford Public School, and Saunders Secondary School, where he first participated in the Junior Achievement program. His academic journey led him to TriOS College, where he studied Information Technology, eventually securing a longstanding position at the Thames Valley District School Board.

Nevin’s commitment to service was further demonstrated when he joined the Canadian Armed Forces on March 12, 2015, as a Signal Operator in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals at 31 Signal Regiment. Stationed at Wolseley Barracks, he excelled in deploying and maintaining communication networks crucial for both tactical and domestic operations. His military training included a wide range of specialized courses, from tactical communications to winter warfare, which he approached with the same fervor he dedicated to every aspect of his life.

A lover of the outdoors, Nevin was passionate about snowboarding, teaching every season at Blue Mountain, and exploring other hills across Ontario. His adventurous spirit was also evident in his love for motorcycles, starting with his first bike, a classic late ’90s 750 Kawasaki Ninja, at the age of 16. His physical pursuits extended to Muay Thai kickboxing, where he trained extensively across the province, though his gentle demeanor never betrayed his prowess.

Nevin’s life was marked by moments of joy and daring adventures. His brother recalls vividly, “Navi loved snowboarding. When he first started, he got his friend Mike to video record him doing tricks around town.” One particular memory stands out; a snowboarding mishap involving a bike rack, which Nevin later recounted with humour, showcasing his ability to laugh in the face of adversity.

His brother also shared a poignant moment of realization about their deep connection, “I knew I loved him, but I had no idea how much he meant to me until now.” This sentiment echoes through the family, with terms of endearment like “lumbhu” and “nevstrodaumus” fondly used to describe Nevin, reflecting his integral role in their lives.

Nevin’s profound impact extended beyond personal achievements to significant contributions within his military and civilian roles. He was honoured with the 31 Signal Regiment Commanding Officer’s Commendation, recognizing his exemplary service. His colleagues at Thames Valley District School Board and the 31 Regiment deeply valued his work ethic and dedication.

The legacy Nevin leaves behind is rich with the lives he touched through his volunteering, his protective nature, and his quiet yet impactful presence. As his family and friends remember him, they celebrate not just his life’s achievements but the warmth, laughter, and love he brought into their lives. Nevin Peter, a respected soldier, beloved brother, and cherished friend, will be deeply missed but remembered with affection and admiration by all who knew him.

“Navi was the brave one, I wouldn’t have ridden motorcycles unless it was for him. I wouldn’t have learned snowboarding unless it was for him. I thought the world of him, he’s so beautiful inside and out. I really cherish him – I hope he knew that. His mental fortitude is beyond. He regularly ran with a 30lbs weighted vest, then rode a bicycle to work in the morning, train Muay Thai after work, then have a military exercise that weekend, sign up for a military marathon in Ottawa or somewhere – was our David Goggins. I was just in awe of him. I’m so proud of who he is as a person. It just hit me, he is just like my dad – get to know my dad and you will know who my brother is.” – Avi

“Navi has a kind heart” – Anita Peter

“His love for life and all his loved ones was unconditional…His favourite time was the night when the stars would come out. He loved how peaceful and still the world felt.” – Avi c/o R

He was so adventurous, fun loving, happy go lucky. His laugh would make other people laugh.

Nevin received the Impact Certificate at Thames Valley District School Board. This award is for “significant enrichment of educational experience or well-being”. He was nominated for this by his supervisor, and the Superintendent of Business Services because of his contributions to not only his team but to the people he supported and came in contact with every day, and the recognition was supported by the Board of Trustees in October 2023.  The comments submitted with the award were:

“Nevin assists many staff with IT related issues at the Education Centre who, directly or indirectly, help create a positive learning environment for students. Nevin takes the time to understand the issue, recreate it where possible, and troubleshoot to find a solution. Nevin provides assistance with care and professionalism and his work is valued and appreciated. Thank you Nevin – You Have Impact!”

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2024 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, where a funeral service will be conducted on Monday, June 10, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. Interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Nevin, you were my big brother. No words could ever express how much you mean you me. You were filled with both courage and kindness -two characteristics that are rarely seen together. Our talks, our laughs and all that you taught me will never be forgotten. The simple kindness and compassion you showed is the legacy you leave this world. I will share your memory with your nieces and will always love you. As my heart breaks with every moment you are away, we rest assured in the goodness of God and that His love never fails. I love you big brother - always! Salvina Cox

I knew Nevin as Master Corporal Peter in the 31 Signals Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces. I spent a lot of time with Nevin this past summer (2023) when he was my instructor on the Signal Operator course. He was a quiet, steady leader, always encouraging and never losing his patience. I remember the words he used when he coached me through difficult moments. It was obvious that he was invested in the skills and well-being of us soldiers. Nevin will be deeply missed by his fellow soldiers. Rest in Peace Master Corporal ❤️

Nevin came to our yoga studio back in 2012, but it was in 2022 that his practice became very regular and clearly a big part of his life. He made a big impression on me, as we connected in a way that brought me so much joy. Nevin told me in writing one day how I had greeted him with a hug "for no reason" and he simply dropped his mat and bag on the floor to hug me back. From that moment on, we hugged every time we saw each other at the studio. Nevin was on a journey of exploration with his yoga and meditation practices, and he openly shared his thoughts and reflections on what he was experiencing on his mat. He never hesitated to ask questions or offer suggestions to help make our studio even better. I loved that about him. Never really cared, not just in words, but with action. My heart broke when I heard the news about Nevin, but I can bask in the knowledge that our time together spent on earth was filled with interesting conversation, fun banter (emails sprinkled with a colourful selection of emojis), and always, hugs. Miss you already, Nevin. You are a shining star. xo Dianne

A donation has been made to BGC London. Message from the donator: I'm really lucky to have known Nevin. I did most of my military training with him, which I'm not fully certain I'd have completed the same without him. He was so positive and genuine. It showed in his words, his outlook, and his commitment to all of his communities. His kindness and personality felt like an umbrella you'd want to have around, just in case of the rain. When people say that he was a positive guy, he really was. I'm still in shock of this recent news, and no combination of words could express my condolences to his family. In memory of Nevin, a donation has been made to BGC London.

My heart is overfilled with sorrow to learn of Nevin's passing. Nevin and I worked together for many years at College Avenue Secondary School in Woodstock, and I was always impressed by and grateful for his professionalism and determination to solve our tech issues at school. He worked with us during the pandemic, and was always helpful, patient, and kind despite the challenges. Nevin was always willing to go the extra mile to help staff and students patiently ; his beautiful smile and kind words of encouragement were noted by many. More personally, Nevin and I often shared laughter, friendship, and stories of our love of snow sports and respect and awe of nature and the outdoors. We talked about our interests and pursuits outside of work, and our love of friends and family. His sense of humour and kindness to all were appreciated by many. I send my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and my most sincere sorrow that Nevin is no longer with us. Amitié, Marie Leduc

My condolences to Nevin's family and friends. I was Nevin's neighbor for many years. Nevin was a great guy. I was always happy to see him and talk to him. Nevin touched many people's lives and was an outstanding member of the community. Rest in Peace.

I was Nevin's first Squadron Commander, having served with this fine soldier from 2018 to 2023. Nevin was an outstanding soldier placing the needs of the Canadian Armed Forces before himself. I have a number of fond memories of having the honour of commanding this fine man. He was quiet but his command presence was outstanding. During his tenure with me, I was able to have him promoted from Cpl to Mcpl and I also had put. him forward for a Commanding Officer's Commendation, which he was awarded. I am proud to have known him, and I was extremely distressed when I learned of his passing. Nevin made a significant positive difference in my life and those around him. I will miss Nevin and his commitment, compassion and friendship. As I said publicly after his death, Nevin was important!

Heartfelt condolences to Nevin’s family and friends. Nevin was MCpl Peter to us at 31 Signal Regiment and a person who took care of me thought my reserve career as a young and at times, disoriented junior soldier. He was the one who showed me the ropes and always cheered me on. I went through some of our texts over the past while today which reminded me of some of the humorous conversations we had. Nevin was always up for a laugh while we worked together doing general duties outside of regular training, and enjoyed talking about food and martial arts. Nevin’s can do attitude and positive outlook was always refreshing when everyone else, myself included were spinning under the weight of our tasks. Regardless of how absurd the situation was, Nevin would simply shrug off any negative energy and encourage the team to move forward. It will be odd to have him gone as he was such a regular presence. Thank you MCpl for your guidance and humility. Our regimental family will always remember you. Velox Versutus Vigilans

Nevi our beloved cousin, you have left us too soon. What you accomplished in your 42 years people spend a lifetime achieving. Listening to the realities of your disaster relief missions with Canadian armed forces always made me so proud of you. You made a big impact, touched a lot of lives in a short period of life. Nevi, you left a great example for the younger generation in the family to follow. My daughter’s will always remember you as mom’s cool cousin who drove motorcycles. We will miss you, Rest in Peace.

In loving memory of my younger cousin brother Nevin. You were such a beautiful and radiant soul inside and out. You filled our lives with love and joy. From childhood sleepovers to late nights out, your energy and company was always comforting, regardless of what we were doing. Though you've left us too soon, your spirit will forever be cherished. My heartfelt condolences to Nevin's family and friends during this difficult time. At work, Nevin was so patient and helpful every time I would message him or try to explain my issues in non-IT language. He never once made me feel silly for being clueless and needing his help for what were always easy fixes for him. Nevin, your kindness and support will be missed at the Education Centre. Thank you for everything you did to help all of us.

~ Angela Wilson

What a loss. I had the pleasure of working with Nevin at TVDSB. Nevin always had a strong sense of purpose when he was working to ensure that the students would be able to use the technology that we provided. He was a very kind and gentle person. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

~ Brian McGill

My only recollection of spending time with Navi (my cousin bro) is from way back in India when Aunt's family visited. We must have been around 8 or 9 years old. I vaguely remember him as chirpy, sharp, agile, and funny. After that, we never got the chance to meet again since we were in India and Aunt lived in Canada. Reading about his life now fills me with pride. This dude was wild yet humble—a true inspiration. I salute you, brother, and pray that we get to spend more time together in our next lives. I'm deeply disappointed that I never got the chance to meet you again. God bless.

~ Yohan Singh

Dear Nevin, I am saddened to hear of your passing. You were such a great support and problem solver with my Microsoft challenges . You were kind, helpful, communicative and always willing to work through the glitches. You even took on my challenge to reset my One Drive back 3 days! I never told you, but I joked with my co workers that I was going to poach you for my husband's IT business! I wish I had told you! I will always carry fond memories of you in my heart and mind and I pray your family will have an immeasurable amount of grace during this mourning period!
