Special thanks to Drs. Chin, Ernst, Shearer, Sexton, Lee and Bauman who treated Mel so kindly, as well as Lisbet, R.N., at the London Regional Cancer Program, and the nurses at Victoria Hospital (B9) who were so wonderful during his last eight days. Mel was a printer at the Sudbury Star for many years and worked at the London Life Print Shop for 10 years prior to his retirement in 1995. He was an avid golfer at the Idylwylde Golf Club in Sudbury, then at Greenhills and most recently at West Haven in London and winters in Panama City Beach. Mel’s quick wit and humour will be deeply missed. The memorial service will be held at Byron United Church, 420 Boler Road, London, on Thursday, March 28th, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. A celebration of life will also be held in Sudbury in the sunny weather. I wanted to call Mel for the last 3 weeks and so odd dreaming about him and could see him at The Sudbury Star many years ago. Mel was our foreman and always a very honest and good person. I suppose we are all getting older and some times have to take the time to reach out to dear friends before it is too late. I know I was a bit of a wild apprentice when Mel was the foreman but fondly think back to all the fun we had working together. Always there to try and steer a young fellow along the path to be a better person and be the best you can be. Mailais I think I met twice many many years ago and I know Mel always talked about his wife and family as they were the most important thing always in his life. This is a very sad time for the Latvala family but know he will always be remembered as a great friend co-worker and a genuine person his whole life. I worked with Mel for over 25 years and we semi kept in contact with the odd work visits while he was in Sudbury. Mel my friend you were always a great person to me and I owe you a lot for keeping me on the straight and narrow when I started at the Star when I was 16 years old. I owe you so much and my heart breaks for Mailais, Lori and Donna and your families. I know how I felt when I heard of Mel's passing and can not even begin to imagine how your family feels. I will say a prayer for Mel and his family to help you through this terrible time but at the same time always remember the great fun times with we all had with Mel. Never find a greater friend than Mel. I miss you so much my friend. Rest in peace. Merle Smith. Sudbury, Ontario.

Dear Mailis & family Although it's been many years since we've seen you & Mel, I remember all those times that you & Mevin along with Laila & Tom visited with my parents, Velma & Alf - always lots of laughing & hijinx. Who could ever forget Melvin's bigger than life smile & all those jokes told in his best Finn accent. Hopefully, all your happy memories can help ease your sorrow. Velma sends a warm hug & hopefully will see you in the sunny weather.

Dear Mailis, Have just received the news about Mel as we are in Florida. We want to express our sympathy to you and your family. Mel was a wonderful man and will always be remembered for his positive attitude and his smiling face. The two of you had a positive influence on the atmosphere at West Haven. We will miss Mel and hope WH continues to be part of your golf family. Michael and Angela
Dear Mailis - We are in South Carolina and have just learned of Mel's passing. We both remember him as a man who loved life, always joking and teasing, loved people and being around people. His strength and courage during his illness is an inspiration to all who knew him. Please know that you and your family are in our prayers at this difficult time.
Dear Mailis, We are down in Texas but wanted to let you know how sad we are about Mel's death. He was a wonderful man who had a smile and a friendly word for everyone. I remember arriving at a Florida golf course and Mel's voice boomed across the fairway " Hi Killans". We were so surprised but that was normal for him. Our wish for you is that the many happy memories you must have, soothe the sadness in your heart at this time. You always looked liked you two had so much fun together. His bravery in the face of his diagnosis will be an inspiration for us all as we face problems in the future. Know you are in our prayers and that we feel blessed to have known and played with you both. Best, Linda and Gerry
Dear Mailis: My very sincere condolences to you and yours. Will really miss his ready friendly smile and jest, whenever he visited Sudbury. Fondest regards. John Hartman
