Merle (née Cunningham) Hazelwood
August 17, 2021
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Merle Hazelwood (née Cunningham) on Tuesday, August 17, 2021. Merle was married to Bert Hazelwood for 60 years until his passing in 2009. Treasured mother of Mary de Papp (Bryan) and Nancy Hazelwood (John Moffatt). Adored Grandma/Gammy of Stephanie Barfoot (Jeff), Michael de Papp (Jasmine), and Brent and Jess Moffatt. Loving GG of Sophia, Kate, Alex, and Rachel. Sister of Irene Lasenby. Sister-in-law of Maureen Hazelwood. Loved by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her sister Olive. Merle worked as an elementary school teacher for over 40 years. She was an avid dancer, spending many evenings dancing at the Stork Club in Port Stanley, Wonderland Gardens, or wherever the music was playing. She enjoyed watching all of the sports and music her grandchildren took part in. As a senior, she belonged to the Huff N’ Puff Association and danced with the Classic Tappers, performing at many venues, including Roy Thomson Hall. Merle loved golf, music, playing piano, and life itself. Special thanks to Dr. Crabbe, Dr. Hamilton’s palliative care, and Florence. Somewhere tonight Merle and Bert are youthful and dancing together again. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at 3:00 p.m., with visitation from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. Registration is required to attend.

Aunt Merle lived life to its fullest. I have so many great memories from our times at the Lodge, our Caribbean vacations and our family get togethers. Our sympathies are with Mary, Nancy and their families at this difficult time. We will miss Aunt Merle very much but take solace in the thought of her and Uncle Bert together once again.
Mary, Brian and all, our sincere condolences. So sad to lose Merle, but what wonderful memories you have of her and what a great legacy of a beautiful family she and Bert left!

To all Merle's Family; We are saddened by the passing of long time friend Merle. We entered Grade 9 together in Lucan High School in 1939. More recently, four of us survivors from the same Grade 9 Class met each year at the Irish Benevolent Society celebration of March 17 - Merle, the late Dorothy (Flannigan) Blake, Sr. Eunice Hennessy and me. Now we are two.
