Mervyn Lorne Carter

June 25, 1937 - June 20, 2022

Passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 23 years, Joan, by his side at Extendicare, London on Monday, June 20, 2022.

At age 21, he proudly joined the London Police Services and retired after 31 years as Constable. During the last 10 years of his career, Merv taught child safety in the school system and he is still greatly respected by former students. He was an active member of the Colborne Street United Church.

Merv was predeceased by his parents Clareena Fleming and Tom Carter; as well as his first wife Mary, the mother of his children. Devoted father of Timothy (Karen), late Randy (Jennifer), Glenn (Heather) and Daniel (Joanna), all of London. Caring stepfather to Philip and Michael (Carole) Bernardo. He cherished his grandchildren: Denise, Russell, Cameron, Derek, Liam, Tristan and Cooper; and great-grandchildren: Connor and Dominic.

A special thanks to his coffee club friends at Cherryhill Mall, his Friday night dinner group, church friends, as well as many other friends for their years of friendship.

Visitation will be held at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the funeral chapel on Thursday, June 30, 2022 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. where a Celebration of Life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m.

The family requests that all guests attending remain masked for the duration of the services.

My parents and Merv vacationed at the same trailer park for many years in Bayfield. Alot of fun was had every summer there. Merv was always full of laughs and jokes. He always had a smile....

My condolences to Joan and the family. I’m very sorry I missed the visitation and funeral service. I’ve known Merv for many years and he had a uniqueness of his own. He was well liked and I think the happiest in policing when he was assigned to schools. He related well to children, was humorous and left the kids with positive education and experiences. He could take a joke and dished out a few too but all in good faith. I saw Merv many times and visited at the coffee table with the Cherryhill group. He will be missed and I wish Joan and the family all the best.

Dear Joan I am sorry to learn of Merv's passing. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humour, that twinkle in his eyes and his service to the City of London, especially his work with the children of London. My parents Lou and Mary Jane Rivard share their condolences.

Merv always had a twinkle in his eye and and a friendly hello! His wit and genuine kindness was truly appreciated to a new police officer. Merv was ahead of his time when it came being approachable and kind to any officer that crossed his path. I really appreciated his friendship, humour, and of course the bar tab that was a mystery each time. RIP Brother.

Like many others I became aware of Constable Carter through my school aged children and, some forty years ago I served with Merv on a City of London Community Service Committee and also came to know him through mutual friends. Merv Carter was unique. In my lifetime I have met no one who could connect with children and adults alike with such humour and sincerity and honesty. We won't see his like again. In their grief over their loss, I hope his family is comforted by all that he stood for.

Could tell so many stories, not sure where to start. What a gem of a man and a true honour to know. I will genuinely miss you Merv.

I worked with Merv when we were both members of the London Police Service. His gregarious personality and his mischievous shenanigans often made what was sometimes a stressful day a little brighter. You always knew when Merv was in the room.
