Jack Sayer: A Life of Quiet Strength and Steady Purpose
Jack Sayer was born in the small town of Swastika, Ontario — a place that marked the beginning of a life rooted in resilience and quiet determination. His father worked for the Ontario Northern Railway, and Jack’s childhood was shaped by the doting care of his mother, the rhythm of train whistles and the steady movement of northern towns. The family moved often, living in Rouyn-Noranda, then Englehart, and finally settling in North Bay. Each move brought new adventures and friendships, and Jack adapted with grace, always observing more than he spoke, always steady in his presence.
In 1954, Jack began his first full-time job at Canadian Tire in North Bay. It was more than just a job — it was the start of a career built on reliability and leadership. Over 16 years, he rose through the ranks to manage the store, earning the respect of colleagues and customers alike. In 1957, he married Fern Dufresne, the love of his life, and together they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering support.
Jack’s journey took a new turn in 1970 when he accepted a position with the Ministry of Northern Affairs, moved to New Liskeard, and became one of the original Northern Affairs officers. One notable event that Jack helped with was after the 1977 fire in Cobalt, Ontario. After the devastating fire Jack played a key role in coordinating relief efforts, helping rebuild a town that had lost nearly 20% of its structures. It was one of many moments where his quiet strength made a lasting impact on those around him.
Beyond his professional life, Jack was deeply engaged in his community. He actively participated in social activities such as golfing, curling, and the Kinsmen Club, where he formed lasting friendships and contributed to local initiatives. His love for hockey ran deep — he was highly involved in the sport in both New Liskeard and North Bay, serving as a coach for many of his sons’ teams and as an executive member of the New Liskeard Cubs. His dedication to youth sports and community development reflected his belief in teamwork, mentorship, and giving back.
After retiring in 1996, Jack and Fern returned to North Bay before embracing winters in Sarasota, Florida — a well-earned season of sunshine and rest. In 2010, they moved to London, Ontario to be closer to two of their children and their granddaughters. Jack cherished every moment with his family, especially the joy of meeting his great-granddaughter. Even in his final days, he found delight in photos and videos of her, his eyes lighting up with that familiar twinkle.
Jack Sayer was a man of integrity, humility, and deep love. He never sought the spotlight, but his presence was always felt — steady, kind, and true. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he adored, and the quiet strength that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Home, 709 Wonderland Road North, London.
