Rudolph (Rudy) Zaugg
February 27, 2026
Peacefully passed away in London, Ontario on Friday, February 27, 2026 at the age of 96. Loving father of Andre (Holly) and Monica (Thom). Adored Opa of Eilish and Hayden (Taylor). Predeceased by his beloved wife Katharina. Survived by his sister Rosemary, brother Albert, and many nieces and nephews in Switzerland, Germany, and Thunder Bay.
Born and raised in Switzerland, he was one of nine children. He emigrated to Canada in 1950. A carpenter by trade, Rudy worked most of his life in the forestry industry in the Thunder Bay area. He was respected for his work ethic, fairness, and quiet leadership.
Rudy had many interests and was always challenging himself. He obtained his pilot’s licence and was a bush pilot in northern Ontario. He had a passion for big band music and played the clarinet and saxophone. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking, hunting, bird-watching, blueberry picking and gardening. Wherever he lived, Rudy planted trees that he nurtured year after year.
Rudy was a dedicated and loving father and grandfather. A man of few words, his actions reflected his values and acted as a guide for his children and grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Simone for surrounding Rudolph with kindness and excellent care during his last years. Our sincere thanks also goes to the staff of Westmount Gardens, who compassionately supported him during his last months.
Cremation has taken place. A private family Celebration of Life and interment will take place at a later date.
To honour Rudolph’s life, plant a tree, enjoy nature, or tend a garden.
“A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”
