Ruth Wright (née Freeborn)

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the sudden passing of Ruth Wright (née Freeborn) in London at the age of 90.  Age is but a number; it feels impossible to believe that someone so full of life is no longer with us.

Ruth was an independent, feisty spirit with a zest for living.  She was always excited to meet new people and interested to learn the story of their lives.  As a lifelong listener to the CBC, she kept abreast of world events and was enthusiastic about discussing politics and current affairs.  Sharp as a tack until the end, Ruth loved to make people laugh and kept everyone on their toes.

Ruth was born during a snowstorm on November 7, 1934, in a Manitoba farmhouse that had no electricity, no running water and no doctor.  Ruth loved to regale people with stories about growing up on the farm and attending the one-room country schoolhouse.

Ruth will be remembered as being a wonderful cook and baker.  She was most happy socializing with friends and family around her kitchen table.  Being an avid sports fan her entire life, Ruth could always be found cheering loudly for any team from Western Canada.  Some of Ruth’s other favourite pastimes were gardening, camping, road trips with her husband Charlie, caring for her Schnauzers and of course, talking on the phone!  Ruth’s favourite role in life was being a mother.  She had a close relationship with her daughter Catherine, who is heartbroken by the loss of her mother.

Ruth was known for her generous heart and desire to help others.  She devoted over 55 years of her life volunteering for the charity I.O.D.E.  Raising money for new mothers, reading programs in underserved schools, and guide dogs were some of her favourite causes.

Ruth was predeceased by her parents Bruce and Velma Freeborn, her husband Charlie and brother Douglas.  Ruth will be greatly missed by her daughter Catherine, son-in-law Walter, stepson Philip, sister Catherine, brother Tommy, and by her many friends.

Ruth’s funeral will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 709 Wonderland Road North, London.  Visitation will be at 2:00 p.m., the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. and refreshments to follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations to your favourite animal charity are appreciated.
