Walter (Walt) Michael Terrence Cherwaty

August 10, 2022

Passed away at LHSC – Victoria on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, in his 82nd year, to cancer. Born to Walter and Mary (née Gregorky) in Hamilton, Ontario. Survived by his loving wife Diana (née Snedden); sons Greg (Lori), Grant (Sylvie), and Graham (Melanie); grandchildren Keaton, Cierra, and Allana; sister Johanna (Bill); as well as many nieces, nephews, and their children. Predeceased by daughter Jacqueline (Doug) and brothers John (Diane), David (Mavis), and Daniel (Sharon).

A well-known teacher at Lord Dorchester and Medway high schools, Walt also coached and refereed basketball throughout his career. For over 50 years he also pursued an altruistic hobby of collecting, cleaning, and selling golf balls, directing proceeds to the charity of buyers’ choosing.

He entered King’s College at age 17 then left teaching at 55. This was hardly a retirement, as long days were filled with countless rounds at Greenhills for many years. When his knees quit, Walt was then frequently found in the London Free Press by way of his many insightful and entertaining letters-to-the-editor.

Deepest gratitude to all at Victoria Hospital, especially those at Parkwood 5B South who became like family these past 4 months.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 15, 2022 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London. Visitation will continue at Westview Funeral Chapel on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. where a service will follow at 1:00 p.m.

My condolences to you, Diana, and your family. I enjoyed my frequent visits to your home to purchase the used golf balls that Walt had sorted out by brand and condition. Golf balls were everywhere, neatly packaged. Thanks to Walt we were able to send hundreds of dollars to the Pharmacy School at The University of Waterloo to help graduating students complete a hospital residency. I will miss his musings on everything golf and those visits.

It was very sad to see the last of three brothers to pass away. My thoughts and prayers go out to my Aunt Diana as well as my cousins and their families. Uncle Wally will be reunited with his mother and father, brothers as well as his only daughter. I am sure they are all looking down on all of us and will keep a watching eye on all of our family members. I know Uncle Wally will be deeply missed by all his friends and family. He is out of pain and can rest better in Heaven. RIP Walter Cherwaty

Walt will forever be a part of the Southwestern Ontario golf community - as a golfer, and more importantly as a philanthropist who unselfishly raised thousands for local not-for-profits. The team at LondonOntarioGolf.com was so thrilled to award Walt with the Heart Award in 2021. RIP Walt. Will miss our golf chats. See you on the first tee. Jeffrey Reed
