Wesley “Wes” James Keener
June 7, 2026
Peacefully at University Hospital, London on Sunday, June 7, 2026 at the age of 83, Wes Keener passed away.
Beloved husband of the late Beth Keener for 47 years. Loving father of Stephanie Goddard (Andy) and Amber Hawrelak (Rob). Cherished grandpa “Papa” of Megan, Brendan, Bennett, Gavin, Taylor and Jordyn. Brother of Arlene Keener, Bob Keener and the late Bill and Alan Keener. Wes will forever be in the hearts of many extended family and friends.
Wes was a lifelong learner and passionate about education throughout his life. He was a teacher and principal, and in retirement, an associate professor at Althouse College. He loved sports, cherished his family and took great pride in his grandchildren. As their biggest supporter, he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on and share in their successes.
In keeping with Wes’s wishes, a memorial bench will be placed in Springbank Park. Both Wes and Beth spent countless hours down at the park. Those wishing to honour his memory are invited to make a donation toward this tribute. (E-transfers can be made to amberhawrelak@icloud.com.)
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Westview Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 709 Wonderland Road North, on Sunday, July 12, 2026 at 2:00 p.m., with a reception to follow.

It says something when you’re 68 years old and still remember your grade 6 teacher. “Mr. Keener”, as he will always be to me, was my favorite teacher growing up. He had a way of connecting with his students on a deeper level than most. You wanted to learn, and do well in his class. I remember rushing lunch to get back to school so we could play football. Everyone wanted to be on Mr. Keener’s team. He shaped a lot of lives in a very positive way.
I considered myself lucky to work with Wes at Northridge for many years. He exemplified what it means to be a gentleman--kindness, honesty, compassion and understanding. He always kept all the "board crap" away from us which everyone appreciated. When the government offered early retirement, Wes took the time to go over what it would mean for me in the future (he put his actuarial experience to use). He was my favourite principal as I know he was to many teachers and students as well as parents. May all the memories that you have help to ease the pain of your loss. My deepest condolences.
The passing of Wes leaves me very saddened. I knew Wes both through his wife Beth, with whom I was on staff those many years ago at Northridge Public School and also while briefly on the teaching staff at Riverside Public School. The sincerity of Wes combined with his sense of humour will leave a lasting impression upon me. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Wes. Ross Spettigue, Windsor, ON
I was fortunate to have Wes as a principal when I was a teacher at Northridge Public School. He was a great principal and great guy. I am very glad to have known him. I know he will be missed by many.

Dear Stephanie, Amber and family, We were ever so sorry to learn of your dad's passing. It's amazing to think about the vast amount of lives that your dad made a profound positive impact, from your family, his friends, countless students (young and old) and staff. My most vivid memories of your dad are just before your wedding. When I think of him, I see him here in these moments. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to contribute to the bench in his memory. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this most difficult time. Love Tara, Trevor, Ashley and Emily Phillips
Dear Stephanie, Amber and families, Your father was a gem to work with at Northridge. He truly cared about each of us and defended us all, in good and difficult times. He always spoke so proudly of the two of you and often would share funny stories about living with three women in the house. He was one of my most favorite people. Will never forget his wisdom, respect for others, sincerity and humor. Cherish all of the wonderful memories. Ruth Ann
My condolences to Wes’s family! Fondly remembered throughout our high school years at Beck , and during adult years , as a true gentleman, kind and caring, and as a dedicated , wonderful educator who always took time with caring, sincere interest and a beautiful smile, to chat and catch up. Rest in Peace, Wes!
So sorry to hear this news about Mr. Keener. I had him as my grade 6 and grade 8 teacher at Riverside Public School. That is going back a long time but I still remember him fondly. He was definitely was one of my favourite teachers. May your memories help you through this difficult time. Debbie

Mr. KEENER is what we called him. He was my Grade 6 teacher at Riverside. He really played a huge role in my life helping all of us kids feel that we were special. He went out at recess and played sports with us and always built us up. A few years ago I met Wes at a wedding in New Brunswick. I was fortunate to sit at his table and be able to thank him for all he did for us. I feel very fortunate to have had him as a father figure and to see him again. We had some great stories. It was truly amazing he remembered most of us. Andy Brintnell
